Here's the scoop. I installed windows XP on my computer (again), and downloaded all the drivers needed for updates, but now, I am unable to access any of the normal microsoft programs (such as word, outlook, etc.) I have tried to reinstall the programs, but I keep getting a message saying that it failed to load something, and an error, telling me it cannot find the admin path or something like it (when I try again, I post exact message). Any help would be wonderful.

Which other programs aren't functioning? Or is it just Microsoft Office, also which version of office is it?

Did your connection cut off at any time, perhaps one of the updates was coruppted mid download and has caused an error?

The short, flippant and thoroughly non-helpful answer: Go back to Windows 98SE.

You might check your MS Office CDs and make sure they're not damaged or corrupted.

If you provide a more detailed account of the error messages obtained and the history of OS'es on your machine, people around here might be better able to help. So add some detail and assistance will follow.

If I understand this correctly, you've reisnatlled XP over the top of a previous installation, and now MS Office has stopped working. Re-installing office should fix that, but as you say you are getting an error message there too. Have you tried removing the files from the prevoius copy of MS Office first?

More detail on the errors would be very helpful.

Ok, here's a more thorough explaination.

Up until recently, I had been using ME (I had XP earlier, but my radeon had no XP drivers, so I went back to ME. During that time, everything worked fine). Anyway, I upgraded from ME last night to XP. All my updates went fine. When I went to check my e-mail, it said that Outlook had no been installed for this user. Fair enough, I thought, so I went to reinstall it. During the installation process, it would tell me it couldn't find the admin tools, and that it could not be installed, which is odd, as I am the admin. So, I figured it just needed a reboot. When I did that, I was given this error message:

"RUNDLL.EXE error
Procedure entry point for Thunkconnect32 could not be found in the DLL."

It then mentioned the Kernel32.DDL, which really worries me, as I don't want the kernel messed up. Anyway, Any advice? Should I just go back to ME, cause it works? Or should I reinstall XP?

Your best option might be to re-insatll Windows XP, but not as an upgrade of ME. Kernel32.dll is not part of XP, so the upgrade process has left some parts of ME that don't appear to be working very well.

Well, for the time being, I've gone back to ME. I'm gonna try to figure out what happened, as it worked for me before. I have been thinking about backing my entire hard drive up, and doing a system restore, to get it back to how it was when I bought the thing, and then updating the OS...

The error was probably due to a partial installation or a corrupt installation due to the admin business, upgrading OS's is always a tricky situation, it is almost always better to fdisk/format and install from fresh. Quite often with some of the more intelligent installation procedures like office it will know if you have tried before and not let you put it over the top...nice of them isn't it

What version of office is it?

Another question is how important is the data, it might be worth doing a full scale back up anyway, just for safetys sake.

Instead of installing XP over ME, you might want to back everything up and do an fdisk/format/fresh install of XP.
