Companion/familiar question

As a druid i'd be obviously interested in using my companion's abilities for scouting. Altogether i cannot find a way to let it do something save but feed, play, follow, guard etc. I cannot figure out how to send, say, a hawk to look around somewhere or even is it just possible. If not, i'll be very disapointed and even wondering if there is any sense to use familiar/companion. I understand the henchmen has the head of his own, but familiar should be condroled like one in BG II, IMHO.

You can should be able to scout with them by possessing the familiar, then ordering the rest of your party to stand ground, I know it sound silly for the familiar to be giving orders but it should work. Then just scout as much as you like.

And how with possible failure and probability of becoming hostile?

BTW,

you cannot use Animal Empathy on your companion, at least in single player...

I apologize. I saw familiar in the title then skimmed the initial post about scouting and answered as best I could. I missed the whole druid/companion part. I thought you were asking about wizards familiars. Sadly enough I haven't yet found a way to scout with the animal companion.
