I updated to the latest version yesterday in hopes of fixing a bug I encountered (Aribeth's ring is gone from my inventory) but now I can't even start the game. Whenever I launch the main menu and click play, it disappears and then my CD-ROM just keeps reading the NWN play disk for a long time but nothing happens. Anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it?

afaik it is a problem with the copy-protection on the CD.
Try searching the official boards for a solution, I think there are a great number of people experience this problem.
Are you using a CD-R(W) to play from? or ordinary CD-Rom drive?

Common with bioware games with patchupdates in my experience is that they won't accept the cd when using SCSI drives luckily I got an IDE also and then it works but sometimes with a lot of games they dun accept your SCSI

Ehrm okay great how to explain
well to keep it simple SCSI and IDE are different connection types IDE is normally connected to your mainboard while SCSI is connected to a SCSI controller but since you dun know what it is then ehm dun think you have it
And cd(rw) = Cdrom player with rewrite option (on top off burning)
Those are just some tech specs but ehrm if you have any put the cd of nwn in a different drive and try that if not yes then go to nwn site and check the faq or contact helpdesk people thingy's

It did that to me twice the other day. I just restarted my pc (which is normally on 24/7) and the problem was sorted *shrugs*

also, try scandisk and defrag if that doesn't work....
