What is the point of guilds?

Seems like a newbie question at first but after playing for two months and becoming grandmaster of each great house (or whatever) The only physical changes in the world come from the great house quests so that leads me on to say...

...Okay I get the great houses, redoran, hlaalu and telvanni. But what really is the point of advancing in other guilds, sure you get more training and a few good items along the way but is there any permenant effect like:

Some permenent affect on the world (alright a few reputation points I'll give that to you),

Some permenant affect on you (not items, skills, or attributes, something like in the main quest, like getting and being cured of corpus),

Some permenent affect to the people (maybe them standing up and facing you everytime you walk into a room, and saying hail to the grandmaster, or something like that)...

Alright, If I were to join a guild, which would have the most of these affects on the world that are described above?

Thanks to anybody who answers these questions

The guilds don't actually affect anything, nor do they change in any dynamic way during the game (unlike the effects from following the main plot). We can all wish they did, but that wasn't placed in the game.

Getting and being cured of Corpus wasn't House-related, IIRC.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but I don't recall that joining a House was required to complete the main quest; that, like the guilds, joining a House was optional.

I can see that being of *a* House, when it comes time, might make the other Houses more willing to support you but I can also see that not belonging to any might have the same effect by removing any hesitancy to support someone from a *rival* House.

But, don't go by me - I killed the wrong person and was shuttled to the....(sniff)....backpath.

Point of joining guilds:
  • Gain experience
  • Gain rep points
  • Gain more places to legally rest
  • Get pointed in direction of certain rare items
  • Access to cheaper services
