Every Summer there are fireworks in Vancouver. Last night as the assembled crowds exclaimed in "oohs" and "ahs" at the display I was irresistably reminded of one of my favourite Farside cartoons.....the one in which a crowd of aliens on a distant planet gaze skywards towards earth uttering "ooh"and "ah" at the spectacle of a mushroom shaped "fireworks display" as it erupts from our planet.....

This led me to think of other Farside cartoons I like...... such as the one of the polar bear viewing the igloo and the caption reads...."Just the way I like them....crunchy on the outside with a soft chewy centre...."

Anyway, IMO Gary Larson (the creator of the Farside) was brilliant (yes, I'm twisted ), and I was just wondering which cartoons and cartoonists people on this board had a fondness for.

Farside, Hagar the Horrible, and I am still pissed that Calvin and Hobbes is gone

For 25 plus years and everyday this cartoonist makes new comics that are funny day in and day out. It has been a classic since 1977 when Jim Davis introduced a certain fat cat and his nerdy owner with an absent minded dog. Garfield. My favorite comic. I read a new Garfield comic everyday and I love it. Garfield, Jon, and Odie (Not implying Ode to a Grasshopper here ) have been excellent and the comic strip has won a place in my heart.

I wasn't really thinking of manga and anime when I wrote up the thread....but I don't see why they should not be included.

My favouite has to be The Far Side too, but Calvin and Hobbes is good too.

I for one, love Dragonball Z!
Sure, bad guy's keep poping up every time. And every time, the next is even stronger then the last. But the story is pretty good, and the characters are very cool.

I got almost all of the episodes and movies. I've got some GT too.

Then it'll be tough choice. Yet I prefer Garfield, heck I even ahve phone resembling Garfield in my room

As for manga my vote still goes for Masami Kurumada's Saint Seiya

Regrettably I haven't found any manga, but I love Ghost in the Shell and Neon Genesis Evangelion as anime.
Masamune Shirow is a genius IMO.

@BS-Those two comics have had far too large an impact upon my perspective, a fact which is probably reasonably evident...

@Ode : Some aime was based upon manga. I.e : Saint Seiya, Fist of North Star, Sailor Moon, Slam Dunk, Curious Play or Fushigi Yugi etc.

If you prefer some funny yet spoty anime you might want to check Slam Dunk

I'm with Flanders on this; Berke Breathed's Bloom County was the best daily comic strip drawn during the 1980s, hands down. My second favourite is Peanuts by Charles Shultz.

Bill Waterson's Calvin and Hobbes. My all time favorite. I have every single book of his comics.

For anime, Ninja Scroll. My first anime I ever saw, and one of the best

Ahh... I love cartoons. Unfortunatly my favourite cartoonists arent afaik known outside Sweden. There are however some with international recognition that I could mention:

Gary Larson to some extent, certainly not my favourite though.

Opus by Berke Breathed was brilliant at times, unfortunatly (or fortunatly depending on your views) its no longer in production.

Robot Man by Jim Med**** was rather good, but nowdays it sucks more or less. It seems that no cartoon, no matter how good it is from the begginig always gets boring after a few years...

@Dottie: Care to mention them anyway, I might know who they are?

I think Tintin and Asterix are good, nice classic quality cartoons.

For an adult audience, Edika and Sokal, at least their 80's work (I haven't followed them since). Both are French, IMO most of the best cartoons come from France or the UK. Edika draws humorous cartoons with ugly and horrible people and a lot of sex, violence and general tastelessness. Very funny but not for sensitive people. Sokal's Canardo is a tragic and cynic cartoon, very dark and depressive.

Perhaps the best cartoon ever written IMO is Stray Toasters by Bill Sienkiewicz. Very innovative, lots of new concepts but also a good story about total misery.

I recalled another one I like quite alot.

@CE: I have the feeling that if you recognize them you'll hate atleast half of them. But here they come anyway...

LOL! I like the Far Side too!

My favourite has a dog hiding behind the open door of a washing machine. On the door of the machine is a sign saying 'cat fud' and an arrow pointing into the drum. There is an inquisitive cat reading the sign, and the thought bubble from the dog is begging 'oh please, oh please!'
