Yet another: Thoughts on the game

Well, I know there are mixed thoughts about NWN. So what I want to know is some good things about the SP campaign, and the bad things.

Also, I would like some details on the camera angle, and why so many people hate it.

But, I've already heard complaints about the engine (which I know is terribly outdated), and that the game isn't true 3E (they left out stuff for balance, I know).

Also, want to hear about the multiplayer, and playing it. Also the Toolset. Heck, tell me how good the DM client is.

I'm days away from buying it, but I'd like to know somedetails first. Oh, please leave out the insane number of bugs. I already know about them. ;)

Having not played through the game yet I can't tell you much, but I can tell you a couple things. First, buy the game. It's well worth the money, bugs or not, and the bugs are being ironed out with each new patch. And I have no idea why people hate the camera. I think it's great. I do have one problem with it though, and perhaps this is everyone's problem. You can't set the angle low enough on it. You can go all the way up and look straight down and you can go down to about a 45 degree angle. Problem is that sometimes you don't see enemies even with it zoomed all the way out. I think you should be allowed to make it go lower.

Well....
Camera angel is isometric view (much like BG-series) where you can zoom in and out, and rotate the view around the PC, but you can't look up or down.

About the SP-campaing, the story, imo starts very uninspiering and trivial and the quests are somewhat boring, but in the second chapter I started getting more into the game and some of the quests was imo very good. There are even quests that aren't the normal "Fed-Ex" or "Kill monster X" wich made for a plesent surprise.
Although the story isn't very deep imo, it is still quite okay, and I have no problems per se with the SP campaing.

As for DM-client, I've not used that much, so I will leave it up to somebody else, and for the rule conversions, well - my knowlegde of 3E is limited so if they are converted wrong or not, I don't know.

I can only recomend the game, if you like the genre (duh :D ), if nothing else for the possibility of roleplaying in multiplayer games :)

It's worth the money just for the mods out there. You may or may not like the SP campaign (it's a mixed bag), but MP really shines and makes the purchase of the game a great value.

As far as the camera angle goes...you have 3 settings to choose from: Chase, Top-Down and Driver. Playing NWN in Driver mode is a blast :D . It offers a third-person viewpoint from behind the character (eg. Tomb Raider, Max Payne, etc.) thet really puts you -in- the game and is great for RPing the character.

I think that you'll find a lot of things you like about the game, so go ahead and get it :)

that is very true. Dont get put off by the begining it gets much better imo.
but you can't look up or down

you can look up and down.... if you have a mouse with a scroll botton in the middle, just press that and you can look up and down.

Well, so far I only know SP, so my opinion doesn't cover MP and the editor.

The game isn't bad, but it's no killer game like PS: Torment or BG2 was. I've never felt the urge to discuss it for hours with friends or colleagues at work. It feels like Dungeon Siege to me - nice game but none for my all time favorite list. I think it's a typical symptom that the average BG2 forum thread is much longer than the average NWN forum thread, NWN lacks all those party strategies and it lacks depth, pure and simple.

The camera is OK, another typical 3D camera with typical solutions for typical 3D camera problems if you zoom in close on walls it draws close automatically etc.

The editor could prove to be a gift for all the gifted DMs and storywriters out there, but I wonder if they don't prefer good old fashioned PnP over creating a CRPG world.

I still think the idea behind NWN has a vast potential, but I wonder why Bioware didn't use it for the SP part and leaves it to the players to write better stories. We all know that Bioware is able to write good stories ...

Thanks all! :) I will certainly buy the game. I was also checking threads at the Bioware and Argyle forums, and I got alot of info there too.

Thank you. :)
