It was announced about 4 hours ago that the oscar Winning Steiger died of Pneumonia and Kidney failure.

Steiger was in such movies as 'On the Waterfront', 'Al Capone', 'Dr. Zhivago', 'Waterloo' and his oscar winning 'In The heat of the night'.

He was known for playing tough, extriemly flawed characters.

I've seen him in five movies, but can't say I really liked him there- so here's the New York Times story, hisfilmography and bio.

First Frankenheimer now Steiger. I hope it won't be another of those weeks. :(

He was also an advocate for black rights before it was really popular, and actually referred to "my good friend, Sidney Poitier" deliberately when he received the Academy for "The Heat of the Night." He apparently lost no opportunity to put the racial question before the spotlight in an unobtrusive fashion that would never get it cut off the air, but make sure it burrowed its way into the American consciousness. Good for him.
