OK - I am well into the game and I am at my first frustration point...

I am trying to heal the spirit of the wood. I have the antidote. The spirit attacks me. I have tried zillions of things to do with the antidote - putting it on the altar, giving it to the spirit, even using it myself - but nothing seems to work. Once, I actually managed to get the spirit calmed enough to talk to (not really sure how) - but still couldn't use the antidote.

Obviously, I am missing something obvious here - I don't see a million other people asking for help on this one.

Just keep on fighting it. Eventually it'll calm down and will start talking with you. You'll have to go through two conversations though before he acknowledges that you have the antidote on you.

yeah you have to end the initial conversation, in which she tells you that she has been poisoned, and then you start another conversation where you will find an option to give her the antidote.
