Moulin Rouge

I am presently suffering through a movie called Moulin Rouge with Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor....... Apparently it received very good reviews...... but so far it seems like a badly done version of a sort of postmodernist Grease ....
Has anybody else seen this film? If so, thoughts?

I've seen it... and can only agree.
Didn't like the story, didn't like the singing, couldn't even get a decent look at the costumes as they always passed so fast on them with the camera. Bad.
It's something for people who like that sort of story, like singing, and don't ming being rushed through everything. You and me apparently don't fall into that category.
Now if somebody could explain why the critics liked it so much ...

Aside from the rendition of Roxanne, which I enjoyed purely because of a certain in-joke I have with two of my friends, and so thought it was intensely funny, I didn't really like it that much either.

Moulin Rouge had a problem of spreading people into two camps. You either loved it or hated it.
I liked it because it was different

Love it! Original, funny, nice cuts, classic love story, Nicole Kidman... Have seen it at least four times and have even bought the DVD. Now, let the flaming begin, I'm soon off to see Chess anyway (no, I don't only see musicals, this is pure coincidence, honestly!).

I have atempted to see it about 6 times now. Everytime i have picked up where I left off and I have yet been unable to reach the end of it, though im very close now. A more boring movie is imo hard to find and its completely impossible to empathize with any of the characters except possibly Zindler(sp?). The musical parts are slightly amusing but the remaing part of the movie I spend wishing the characters harm.

I thought the movie concept was great, as were many of the cuts, but I do agree that the acting was subpar. I did enjoy it, but I also tend to look at movies with a critical eye, and saw the flaws in it as well.

The only reason I've seen this movie is Nicole (*drool*

) - I'm not into musical movies, but the concept is good (not great though

)

Glad I'm not the only one.... as Mysteria said, I am curious to know why the critics loved it so much, Of course I've never been keen on musicals and I generally have a low opinion of post modernism.....so I am probably biased to begin with.

I think you might be talking to a biased group considering we all play some sort of CRPG.....just imagine Morte watching Moulin Rouge....or Sarevok for that matter.....

@ Sleep, lol!
I am glad to hear that you don't find Nicole that exciting.... I was wondering if it was just my partner who found her uninteresting.... I guess part of my opinion has been formed by her antics in the whole Tom Cruise episode. No doubt there are two sides to it all, and personal issues we will never know about....but I found her behaviour through it all rather spiteful and vindictive....
Not that I find Tom Cruise very inspiring ...I've always considered him quite vacuous....
