Christoper Columbus, who is honored in a national holiday and speak of as a hero, was actually one of the most evil men in history. directly or indirectly, he caused the deaths of over a hundred million people.
As we know, columbus "discovered" america. he also enslaved and killed a tribe of about 2000 natives from the island he landed on, but thats just the beginning.
he opened up the americas for spanish and european conquest and colonization. european travelers to the americas brought smallpox, to which the indians had to resistance to. a few million deaths right there. plus, spanish conquering incas, etc and enslaving them, caused a few more million deaths. European travelers returning to europe from the new world also brought a new, strong strain of ssyphillis, which caused an outbreak in europe which killed several million.
However, the most deadly thing that was brought back from the new world was....
the potato. brought back to europe, it was discovered that this plant could grow and thrive even in the cold weather and poor soil of northern europe.
which this did save a few million from starvation in ireland, it also allowed germany and russia to grow much more food and calories per acre. less people were needed for farming, and the countries could begin the industrialization process. this led to their 20th century rivilries, causing the first world war which killed several million. the first world war allowed the communists and later stalin to come to power in russia, and his purges killed even more than those of the holocaust, which came next during WW2, during which the slaughter of many more millions occured.
all because of colombus and his damn potatoes.
