Scams

For your edification i thought i would start a thread on scams that are doing the works at the moment, feel free to add your own.

The business i am in i see a lot of the internet related ones, so here is number one:

I can't remember the exact name of the company, but they were faxing everyone with a domain name saying the following type of thing.

"If you do not send a cheque for £200 to (company name) your domain name will be turned off, we accept no responsibility for the lost domain name"

A legitimate domain name company went down to the PO Box where people were sending the cheques and lo and behold there is no one ther, just a door and a letter box (and the building obviously ;) )

This company apparently made 10 grand within the first month. The question is, are people just stupid?

Number 2:

An e-mail from a site called europa-club.com "searchengine".
The e-mail announces that the site address has changed (as if you knew about them already) and if you wish to add your URL, you can do this for free.

The "searchengine" is in fact a database, containing only URL's from unsuspecting URL owners and there is a large proportion
of links to porn sites.

Anyway, the entry is only free if you provide a backlink to your ownsite. The terms and conditions are "binding" and loaded totally infavour of the site. You then get an e-mail saying please confirm youhave submitted your URL otherwise it will be erased from their site.

Then, when you haven't confirmed, and there is no backlink, Herr
Peter Kurz sends you an invoice requesting payment of the EUR
equivalent of just under £100. You can protest all you like, but all
you get is reminders and an "urging fee", adding to the total bill.

I have no sympathy for people who are dumb enough to fall for those stupid scams. (unless they are old or metally ill people) Most scams are SO stupid that I can't understand people fall for it.

Those scam "artists" wouldn't be able to get money if people just think and check! (Unless they think of one super smart scam, then it'sa different story)

this is not a online scam!.. but there have just been this huge thing here in Denmark about this man, who tricks people (mostly elders) into doing volunteer work in Thailand (i think it was Thailand). And then they give him money to buy their plaine tickets to (what ever destination).. and he takes off with the loot!. The fun thing is, that he have done this a couple of times. he trick some people for "X" money and takes off to another contry, when the scandal have died down here in DK, he goes back and does ecsactly the same scam once more....

will people ever learn?!

Hey i paid good money, well Ysh did with her credit card, anyway i want to learn how to scam.

But stupidest one is the company that faxes you asking you to send them money to build a village in Africa. There is only the mailing address and the money they need, no plans of whta they are gonna do with the money and people still send them money.

I thought they should have pardoned Skasey and made him the new foreign minister. Quite beyond the fact that all politicians are crooks anyway, if Skase had had the right opportunities he could have got rid of all foreign debt and made Australia the richest country in the world within a few years. :D

EDIT-For a hug (: p) I'll find a link explaining who Skase was in more detail than I can recall off the top of my head, @Azmodan. :D

I used to get loads of ones from Nigeria saying that one of the bad generals in the civil war in Sierra Leone had recently died and left lots of money in a Swiss bank account. Apparently they needed an untraceable third party to provide a small investment (£100,000 or so) and a bank account (with all details) so that they could get the money before the bad guys mates. I stood in line to make $10,000,000 as my share. They had selected me because they had done a background check and I was obviously a solid and honest person who would be willing to aid the oppressed people in Sierra Leone.

I was tempted, but thought I would wait for the bad guys to make a counter offer.

There is a reason why the title says nothing about spam ;) Just try to keep it rational and relational ;)

LOL! Good one, Minerva!
