What school of magic did you take 4 your mage? Conjuration may be popular, but I took Necromancy, coz I liked the Necro in DiabloII Image

Dealing with death - it certainly does sound like a cool specialisation. However, I must confess that I find the Necromancer to be one of the weakest. Although I do like the necromanceer spells (Hold Undead is for example one of my more used spells), the disadvantage from being denied the illussions is to great. Illussions are in my opinion the only effective way to save your wizard when he gets in real trouble. Several ennemies have come up close and are now trying to cut your wizard to pieces. A quick mirror image gives you a couple of seconds. Invisibilty or Shadow Door makes the wizard disappear. Problem solved. Position the wizard behind your fighters and take him back into action. I've actually played the game half-way through with a necromancer before finally admitting that I found him to fragile for my playing style. Since I never use more than two fighters, I can't have one of these as a personal bodyguard for the necromancer at all time.

If you want to be the poster boy mage. Then That is the Invoker. The one most of the books portray.

i chose illusionist, which i sort of regret, since jan is the only other mage in my party, he is also an illusionist, which means nobody can do the cool necro spells. no matter what you do, though, you would not want to take charm/enchantment because it makes it impossible to do the invoking spells which are sort of the meat of the mage offensive, at least at lower levels.

You know, I was planning to start an enchanter character, just to see how a mage could survive without resorting to magic missile and Melf's minute meteors. With my current game, I use a lot of greater malisons (which have an area effect! and it's also an enchantment spell) and toss a few chaos/hold monsters/domination spells (enchantment spells). With single monsters like dragons, I resort to ray of enfeeblement and/or nec spells (finger of death as final touch).

My only problem are huge numbers of magic resistant enemies attacking you at one time (i.e. drow). I can't think of a good strategy and I end up conjuring pets and monsters out of lack of inspiration.

i defintitly like the invoker cuz their opposite school is enchantment, and i prefer to destroy my enemies than to take control of them. thats one reason i dont like evil clerics. when turning undead they take control of most of the undead instead of frying them.

There's a reason why conjurer is popular. There's hardly any useful divination spells, and the one's that are benefit the enire party, and can be cast by someone else like Aerie. Therefore you get something for nothing.

I would also tend to the illusionist. Apart from 'Abi Dalzim' there's hardly a Necro spell I use.

My initial urge was to go with an Invoker, but I saw that there aew 2 opposition schools, enchantment and conjuation. I could live without enchantemt, but conjuration is a really good school IMO.

I agree with magusg; Conjurer is the obvious choice as the best (to me), because there are so few (and even less useful) divination spells that cannot easily be covered by another party member, or an item (those identification glasses).

The Necro in D2 was the best of all charecters by far IMO even after the patch(s)
but the necro here in BG2 is laking a bit but it doesn't matter I bet you just like the whole ide of being a deathraiseing evilsummoning big mean spell casting machine, right? Image
I know I did

I have never played with a pc mage and am really considering which one to be when i do

Necromancer looks a bit bad because you miss out on helpful spells. At the end of the day when I choose a specialist mage i look at what the opposition schools are, not think what spell school I like and then chose that spec mage. For example if i really like necromancy spell i wont immediatly think i want to be a necromancer but instead i will rule out being an illusionist as they cant cast it. I am not really sure what i want to be.

I am intersted in being a gnome because i can have 19int but they can only be illusionists which would mean that i cant cast necromancy spells Image. I think i will be a normal mage, i might play through bg as one and port him into bg2 this is because i will be able to get the int tome
