HOSTS file

Okay, anyone here know how to work the HOSTS file?

I had it set up before with the vast majority of Ad sites blocked. After my reformat, I downloaded the list of ad servers, placed them in my HOSTS file, and nothing happened.

I can't seem to block any site with it since the reformat.

Anyone got any ideas why the file wouldn't be working?

The hosts file is simply a local static mapping of DNS host file names to IP addresses. A text tutorial should be present in the hosts file designating the proper nomenclature for making additional entries.

Sorry, haven't done much with the ad blocking freeware. Personal opinioin there is that such programs are more hassle than their worth. by the time you have them functioning optimally and have crushed all the odd bugs and conflicts arising from additional software/games on the machine, the ad designers already have a new way around the ad blocker software.

Not interested in the programs.

But the HOSTS file just 100% is not working. Just refuses to recognize anything.
