Celebrating Tinuveille´s birthday, the three of you are enjoying a nice beer in The Drunken Dragon Inn in Silverymoon.
On the inn´s stage a local bard is performing. The songs are so awful that you don´t want to listen to them, but they are so bad that you are can´t stop listening to them. Entertainment in it´s worst form. Peasants playing cards, women looking for their husband and adventurers complete the scene. Right next to you are some rangers bragging about perilous adventures they made. Beholders and dragons were only common encounters to them. It´s quite entertaining listening to this boasting.
The inn is very crowded, but it´s cosy. However beer and the rising temperature in the inn are a hotbed for aggression and suddenly one of the rangers is drawing his dagger and starts swearing. Then he charges at Tinuveille. ´Where is my money! You stole my pouch! You were looking at it all the time and now it´s gone. Give me my pouch back or suffer the consequences, rogue!´
´I was just listening to your stories. And I never even glimpsed at your pouch, so back off! It´s my birthday and I just want to drink a beer or two with my friends.´
But the ranger is furious at Tinuveille and attempts to stab her. Fortunately he is drunk and he stumbles, almost stabbing himself to death. Laughter rises up from the crowd and everything seems to be solved.
At this very moment the City Guard is entering the scene. Surprisingly they don´t arrest the ranger for attempted manslaughter, but they arrest Tinuveille for thievery instead. To your own astonishment the ranger´s pouch is hanging on Tinuveille´s belt. Tinuveille is being carried away and heading directly for the city prison where she is going to spend the night. At the latest moment, just before leaving the inn along with the Guards Saien spots a man in a black cloak in the darkest corner of the inn, next to the stage where the bard stopped playing. He is sniggering at the sight of Tinuveille being carried away. The halfling´s face is invisible, but the large green ring, shining in the light while he is rubbing his hands, isn´t.
In the middle of the night Tinuveille is trying to catch some sleep, but it´s very difficult after being thrown in jail for doing nothing. On your birthday for crying out loud. Suddenly the door of the corridor is opened and footsteps are coming towards you. A small dwarf, apparently a warden, stops right in front of you.
´Do you want to be free?´, he askes.
´Why…what….how?´, Tinuveille doesn´t know what to say.
´It´s a simple question´, says the dwarf, ´do you want to be free? Yes or no?´
´Yes.´
´Then do as I say. After I open your cel, knock me unconscious. Head immediately for The Cold Wood northeast of Silverymoon. Look for an orc called Zerk. He has raped my wife and is never caught for that crime. I want you to kill him. Do we have a deal?´
After some hesitation Tinuveille agrees and your door is opened. At the moment you want to hit the warden he is shot by an arrow. His heart is pierced. Tinuveille looks at the door of the corridor, which is about to be closed. A halfling in a black cloak is sneaking out of the prison.
For a moment Tinuveille is stunned, but she recovers her wits. If she stays here they will think she killed the warden in an attempt to escape. Tinuveille runs towards the direction from which just a few seconds ago the arrow was fired, leaving the corrupt but poor warden behind.
When Tinuveille exits the prison she runs into her two friends who just left the City Hall after making a statement. There is no time for chit-chat, as the City Guards spotted the three of you already.
´There she is! Her friends helped her escape! They´ve killed Jirdan! Murderers!´
You flee into an alley, which is smells like a sewer. The alley leads to a small street.
The pale moonlight shone down on our heroes as they raced through the dark and dank alleys of Silverymoon. Wooden ornaments, a loaded crossbow and holy-symbol, jostled at the side of one of these heroes. The earth-tone colors Saien McGerney wore melded with the shadows, but he could not hide from what chased after him and his companions. His wielded his third ornament, a quarter-stave, in both hands.
"What have you gotten us into now, Tin?" he said, casting a glance to the elven huntress that ran the same race as him. Saien was not angry, though perhaps his companions would not have guessed as much. Nevertheless, his demeanor was a far cry from the joking manner he typically displayed. Those guards had cried "murder," and they seemed ready to put a sword through the trio.
Saien continued, "Do you know a place we can hide-out here in the city? I'll try to lead the guards away while the two of you make for safety, and then meet you as soon as I can."
Tinuveille stood silent, motionless, staring at them with an inquiring look on her face. At once, with a sudden move she wrapped herself in her long mantle as she was trying to hide from an unseen enemy; her hands made a reflex move as she was searching for her knife…
” …A hiding place, yes, I might know “Tinuveille answered swiftly. “If we go west we run into the old city catacombs. They are old ruins now, but we can easily get on the other side of the city. A hidden poor district is there, where the blind men open their eyes and the cripples are jumping on their both feet counting the poor coins after a day of begging… no rule to enslave the outlaw, no law to govern, no edict to rein the starving crowd. On the crossroads is an abandoned old house, a wreck were even the poorest creature refuses to find shelter. We will wait for thee there.”
"Alright, but Saien, take care of yourself", said Li in his usual carefree manner. He looked at Tin and said "you lead the way, im still getting lost in this place."
Saien continued, "Get out of sight, and stay that way until I've led the guards away. And keep your eyes open. Someone is obviously working against us." He began to move away, then gave one last warning, "And if you come across any of the militia, try not to kill them. We're already in enough trouble as it is."
Saien then moved across the street, waiting for the guards to appear.
"There he is! After him, his friends can't be far!", commanded the chief of the Guards. Three Guards obeyed an they were chasing Saien as quick as their armor allowed them to.
In the mean time, Tinuveille and Li were heading for the old city catacombes. With just two blocks to go they walked into a city patrol. They weren't spotted yet, but they would be soon enough, since they full moon provided enough light and shadows were scarce. At that time, a door from the left of our heroes was opened and a small dwarf looked at them. With some gestures he made clear that they could come in and also to keep quiete.
Li was digging in his memory for he was sure to know the little man. But he couldn't figure out who it was right now.
He looked at Tin and said "Should we follow him, because I don't know, the dwarf seems familiar, but I can't place him. I have made several enemies and this could be one of them. Then again, maybe he really is a friend, and I am just overly suspicious. I think it's up to you."
From now on, new parts of the story will be posted in new posts. So please read on...there´s more
