Has anyone noticed that commercials are getting closer and closer to X-rated?

I just now heard a commercial on the radio that started with "If you're a women and unsatisfied with your lack of desire and sexual intensity..." and went on to advertise some kind of aphrodisiac(sp?).

Seems like, at the rate things are going, commercials will have to be rated, too. What do ya'll think?

There is an built-in control valve for that- the stations (radio & tv) have to approve any spot BEFORE it airs. So, every station gets a copy of every commercial it airs before it plays it, and decides whether the content will be offensive to its viewers (listeners). So, on mass appeal stations, commercials will continue on an exactly parallel course with content (shows), i.e., if content gets more raunchy, then so will the commercials. The FTC only gets involved on questions of legality & truth in advertising. Wherever freedom of speach is a basic tenant of a country's belief system, the right to air sex-related commercials is protected, and should be. If you don't like it, turn it off. (no arguements about "what about the kids", the response is "where are the parents").

Aye, that makes some sense. And I would expect it much more if I was listening to a station like 104.7 KISS FM, but I'm listening to 102.5 KNIX "Arizona's Best Country." The commercial imediately followed a commercial for some kids thing at some Museum in the Valley.

I've also noticed some of these "bad" commercials on PAX TV and TNN, as well as on Cartoon Network, Fox(during "Fox Kids"), and WB(saturday morning/weekday afternoons). Those last three are specifically for kids, yet they're showing commercials for things to increase sexual intensity, decrease impotency, etc.

The point of airing those commercials is that a lot of parents watch the shows with childrens so it's ideal oppourtunity to appeal to an audience.

@ Witch King, very funny... :D :D

i'd have to agree, some commercials seem to be a little obscene, for example, the herbal essecences shampoo comercials, you know the ones, Well, maybe you euros don't, but i'm sure they even have those in arizona.

Yes, definitely. I particularly remember the one set in a courtroom. At the end of the ridiculous event, that old lady popped up and says, "If you think that's great, you should try the body wash." It's also false advertising. I use that shampoo and that never happens when I shower. :(

i dunno, it always works for me, all i say is "i've got the urge" and three men come in and start washing my hair. My favorite is the library one, where the guy has the book Moby ****, and the shampoo flies into that one girls face. i think they're pretty funny. and is this Kiss FM the same one we got here in CA?

It's the same one as in CA, TX, and every where else.

They just played the commercial for the aphrodisiac again on KNIX...

ugh, i hate those direction books that are written in such poor english that you can't understand them. You know the ones, the ones that you get in japanese products that were translated by some random person working for the company, you'd think they could pay someone to read through and fix it, jeez.

I don't know about anywhere else, but in British cinemas, they include ratings on the adverts they screen before the film. It's a good laugh trying to work out why particular adverts are given a 15, or an 18 certificate. I wonder what the Clairol ads get...(yes we have them here too)

Worst ads IMO opinion are the Pepsi ones with the celebrities, Shakria, Britney etc. The strange thing is that the Pepsi Max ads are some of the funniest I've ever seen.

EDIT- Just realised that this an X comercial thread.
So I'll just say that I also hate those herbal essence shampoo ads.

Especially the catchphrase.

*She's got the urge...*

My opinion on the worst adverts is probably tampon's and women's sanitary products, don't get me wrong they are necessary, but the adverts are complete tosh, they don't refer to the product at all and are usually some crappy suggestion of what a woman wearing Cotex can do if she just wears their product.....tosh!

And what do men get, some geezer shouting "RONSEAL QUICK DRYING WOOD STAIN, IT DOES EXACTLY WHAT IT SAYS ON THE TIN!!!", women get arty, compelling and endearing adverts, men get some guy shouting...what does that say?

For the all time best advert joke ever one has to refer to the late Bill Hicks; the master of the innapropriate, i would do that gag but it requires some visual explanation ;)

I wonder why Toxic Shock Syndrome is never mentioned in tampon commercials?

Imagine a commercial with super fit model types playing beach volleyball and a banner down the bottom

- "WARNING misuse of product may cause serious illness or death"-
