Be sure to check the Icewind Dale walkthrough first here at gamebanshee if you are stuck.

IWD patch here.
HOW patch here .

I will incorporate some of the solutions to common problems in this thread. Thanks to everyone who answered questions in the past - Sojourner, Mr Sleep, T'lainya, Yshania, etc. You know who you are and may you be justly rewarded. PM me if you come up with any ideas. :)

The door to Kresselack's tomb

This is opened by a hard-to-see lever on the pillar nearest to the door you came in by (furthest from the tomb door on the raised area with the open sarcophagus). If HoW is installed, hold down ALT to see the lever.

The six badges

Marketh, Malavon, Ilmadia, Perdiem, Joril, and Krilag's (most often missed).

The first 4 are in Lower Dorn's. Joril's is in Wyrm's Tooth and Krilag's in Upper Dorn's.

Travelling between sections
  • You can travel betwen the sections or import your party from the main menu.
  • HoW is accessed from IWD through Hjolder in the South East cabin of Kuldahar.
  • Once in HoW you can travel to TotL from Lonelywood (the halfling in the Whistling Gallows Inn) at any time.
  • Hjolder can take you back to Kuldahar or Lonelywood anytime on finishing HoW (from the bottom of the Lonelywood screen or the Kuldahar shack) - or this happens automatically if TotL isn't installed.
  • Recommended: finish IWD first, then import into HoW. Attempt TotL before finishing HoW
Frozen screen after returning to Easthaven

Different users have reported different success with various measures over this issue. Try these out:
  • Re-install IWD
  • Install the patch
  • Install HoW (patch included)
  • Empty the cache folders in the IWD directory
  • Increase the cache size in the IWD setup
  • Create a new folder in your IWD directory and call it something like Override2. Copy all of the files from the original Override folder into Override2. Delete all the files in your original Override folder. On arrival at Easthaven, save and exit the game. Copy all the files from Override2 back into your original Override folder and delete Override2. (last resort - special thanks to Yshania ;) ).

sorry for the spam...

I haven't played IWD and only found this topic by chance, but... in computing 'cache' refers to a place you temporary keep files that are accessed often. Emptying the cache is equivalent to deleting all the temporary files.

To empty the cache in IWD find a folder called 'cache' 'temp' 'temporary files' or something to that extent and delete all its contents.

edit: your question is quite old. If you already know the answer, or for some other reason my reply is no longer relevant, feel free to delete it :)

I thought there was another way beside doing it manually...
anyway, i find this a bit chaotic so let me split this thread into smaller parts. I'll pick the most important problems and make them a sticky.
