I'm trying to mak an outline for school, but every time i hit enter the document goes back to normal.
I mean i have my outline set up with 1(roman numeral), the A, then little arabic 1 then a, but when i try to get 2(roman numeral) the comp goes back to a normal word document. It forgets the outline!
Blasted Microsoft Word!

After hitting enter to continue to next thing after explanations, no 3 or A pops up..

On the Menu Bar go to

Tools>Autocorrect

Click on the AutoFormat at You Type Tab and uncheck the "Automatic Bulleted Lists" and "Automatic Numbered Lists" options.

What the computer is doing is seeing that you want to create an outline and it is formatting it for you, against your wishes or in a way that is undesirable to you. If you don't let the machine do the formatting, and set everything manually, you won't have this problem.

Maybe its another problem, related to what HLD says (why must people have such long names? :D ).

When you hit return on the last bullet, Word reverts to "normal" or body text with the regular bullet list. Go to "bullets and numbering..." and check that your format is there. Check that the selected area corresponds to your bullets and re-apply.

Alternatively, set up a "style" under the format menu where the "normal" text has your bullet style.

If all else fails, apply your bullets when you have finished your document rather than part way when it is subject to change.

It's all part of the plot.

At least you can shorten my name to HLD; that's not half as bad as some of the other folks around here (ahem, ThorinOakensfield!). But even our friends Thorin and Ode to a Grasshopper aren't the worst possible cases: imagine how bad things would be if C Elegans made you type out Caenorhabditis elegans everytime you wanted to address her . . .

By they way, Thorin, do what Gruntboy says and check your bullet style preferences, too.

Another option is to use WordPerfect. It's much more user-friendly and its formatting options are easier to navigate. Plus it's not a Microsoft product.
