i think this whole thing is a mess, dozens of people die each day, just yesterday it was front page L.A. times. the only thing is, what should be done? i'm no politician, but something ought to be done quickly. this meeting in lebanon is not getting them anywhere it seems.

This happens on both sides- A Palastinian jounalist was thrown into a dungeon for showing pictures of celebration at the September 11th attacks.

@Morlock is correct. The Israeli government employs very heavy-handed censoring tactics, but Arafat's followers have seen to it that even highly placed members of his circle who don't toe the line suffer considerably. Both societies are extremely polarized.

I've been living in israel more than 10 years, I think that there is no chance that the israelis and the palestinians will ever live in peace. the problem for the israeli is that the government has no ballz to do anything practical against the enemy and people here are no longer socked by acts of terror because it's a regular everyday life... I feel very strange when I hear on news that no terrorists were detonated that day. at least I realize the how powerful the enemy is and that is gonna be too later when the IL GOV decides to act against it. and all the religion thing is just ridicules and silly... so many wars because of it. all I have to say is... KILL KILL KILL... -the moment when there will be peace between the sides is when one of the sides is terminated!

Well, hopefully it won't come to that. I think if the Israelies and Palestinians appoint leaders in the mould of de Clerk and Mandela with concrete visions of peace, anything is possible.

I think it;'s all a matter of pride, and thats why itnever stops. A suicide bomber takes out a cafe, so whathappens? the other side retaliates, and the other side retaliates, and so forth. If that were to stop, then the peace talks could actually get somewhere.

it's very cynical and depressing, but i actually agree with xan devir on this one, there won't be peace till one side is gone.

'Question is, which one? Israel has the firepower, thanks to the US, but Palestine has the numbers.

The problem is that each side has wronged the other so often that everyone has basically forgotten why the fighting started in the first place. All anyone knows anymore is vengeance and hatred.

When you throw in the religious element, you lose all hope of cooler heads prevailing. The Israelis believe they are entitled to the land that was promised to Abraham and his descendents. The Arabs believe that Allah has given them that same land to do His will. Since each faction has God on their side, so anything they do, no matter how henious or reprehensible, is legitimised because they are doing "God's will".

When apartheid ended in South Africa, it was because of a social revolution, not a religious movement (although religious elements were instrumental in bringing both sides to the table). Until the element of religious motivation is removed from the situation in the West Bankl, extremists among both the militant Israelis and the Islamic Jihad et al, must be silenced.

As I said- its a cycle. Everyone born in the past couple of decades has been witness to enough agression from both sides- that hate and vengence is he only immotion possible against the other side.
