I have the skeletal arm with the ring of calling. When I go to the hall of wizards to get Caalenfaire to release the ring from the arm, I get the message that he will not speak to me untill I have left the dungeon. Don't I need the ring to be freed so I can get out of the halls, or am I missing some simple exit here?

No the only way to get to the Speculum the first time is with the Ring of Calling. Did you cleared the room with the Seal of Mythanthor to the Halls of Light, i believe you get a message that you have to free the ring to open the seal, visiting Caalenfaire after that might correct the problem.

I believe I may have found out what the problem is. I accidently sold the arm to Nottle, then went to the hall of mages. this probabily triggered the next dialogue responce, so when I went back with the arm, the game isn't picking up on the right spot. Looks like I'll just go back to a much older save game and try again. (I'll make a run back through the halls of light to the one room just to see if I missed a trigger responce there.)
