I'd say Ariel was closer to 16 than 12. Budding hormones and all that. Besides, who besides a teenager would sell her voice to a sea-witch so she could be transformed into a human?

I'm more curious as to why we are thinking about this...

I believe that Ariel is 18. That's my story, and I'm sticking with it.

I was listening to Part Of Your World from The Little Mermaid and this thing about her age popped into my head. Yes, I have too much free time, but that's cause I'm on Spring Break.

One must wonder intensely as to why her age should be 18. This wouldn't have anything to do with a legal connection, would it?

Anyway, how old is Ariel? She's the youngest daughter, and considering that none of her sisters were married, the oldest would have likely been in her late teens/early twenties, don't you think? IIRC, she has 6 older sisters. So, if they're each a year apart, and the oldest was 18-20, then Ariel would be about 12-14.

How old is the human man she fell in love with and married? It looked to me that he was probably in his early 20s.

So, are they putting a 20+ year old with a 12-14 year old?

well, you are putting a lot f human qualities on the mer people. why do the daughters have to be a year apart? maybe the gestation period for a mermaid is only a couple days. also, maybe they wait till much older to marry, assuming they marry at all, so that really doesn't date the sisters or ariel at all. plus, maybe mermaids live to be hundreds of years old, so ariel could have been 50 or so and much older than the prince.
as far as how old the prince is, don't they ever say what birthday it is of his they are celebrating?
no matter how you lookat it, it's sick. she was never turned into a human, she was just given legs. so who knows genetic freaks their children may become.
one more question, how on earth did those seashells stay on?

That little tidbit of knowledge probably just flushed my machismo levels down the toilet.

I am wondering that perhaps maybe someone has to much free time on their hands, lucky Saturn you have Spring Break I just ended mine, boy does it suck coming back to class.

Anyway I say don't think to much into questions that are better left unaswered, especially any Disney movie(oh that Pocahantas and Jane from Tarzan), actually if one thinks about it Disney movies lately have a distintively sexual flavor which was lacking in their earlier movie, oh damn it thinking about Disney movies, must not think about it, oh double crap I'm thinking about that bloody Its a small world song, thanks a lot now that thing will be in my mind the entire week, its a small world after its a small world after all its a small world after all, its a small, small world, hee hee maybe I have shared the benefits of that irritating song.

Lesson don't think about Disney movies or you will end with that blasted song in your head.

Yeah - it is fun many of the turist comming to Denmark to see a statue of a *little* mermaid and then finding out it is not the size of Big Ben or something but a small pice of bronze

IIRC, in the "traditional" story they had a child who had webbed feet.

On the topic of clams, is it just me or was that mermaid slightly too 'developed' to be a 16 year old? Those clams wouldn't have fit any 16 year old I've seen...

BTW, there was a real Pocahontas (what a stupid name), except she was 6 years old during the time portrayed in the Disney flick.

*ahem* You've obviously never been to Texas. Most of the other girls in my 6th grade class were that 'developed.'
