Windows pains!!

I am not a happy person...I bought Desciples II yesterday and tried to install it but first it said that it caused a page fault and then it said that it caused an exception and then it wouldn't even read it and then it read it as a cd..rrrrrggghhhh!!!Now I can't even start my computer without it going into safe mode....It tells me that I have to go into my control panel and fix whatever it is....I haven't the slightest clue...I checked my drive and it doesn't appear to have any conflictions....I don't know what it is supposed to say...I can only run with a limites source of networks running in safe mode....Anyone with a good knowledge of how to fix this and to tell me how to get things to install....I bought pools of radiance and it did the same thing but only after I installed it....
I would appreciate any and all help on this subject....step by step would be good....if not oh well....

A .cpl file is corrupt? Is that what the error says?
It will be very difficult to sort this problem remotely, you could try re-installing your OS over the top if possible.
I wouldn't be hasty in doing these things, wait for a few more replys.
I will try to think of anything.

If the only thing you have done to your system is to install a new program, you might want to go to the game manufacturer's homepage and see if this is a known issue; Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor was riddled with install bugs that caused hard drives to crash and/or wipe themselves out. They only fixed it with a massive amount of patching.
You might also want to check and make sure that you have the latest patch for whatever version of Windows you're running as well as the latest drivers for all of your major hardware (video card, motherboard, sound card, etc.).

Ok if you are running win2k or XP, you can make the bootable disks. Boot from the disks and you will be given the options to repair instead of reinstalling your OS. if you need help of how you can make these disks let me know because i'm not sure what OS you are using.
Another way is, but only with winME or XP, is to boot in safe mode and restore your settings to a previous date using system restore, usually a new restore point is created automatically every couple of days so it might fix the problem.
If you can give more inforamtion about the kind of problem we might be able to help more.

It says that there is a stack dump...there are a variety of things that it says are wrong with it....but Diablo II works great all the time....wierd....wierd....

Always the simple things
Yeah this is definately worth trying
Also check what programs are in loading at startup, it might be a conflict with those.

exception fault ? now i remember
maybe the most common error win98 almost for every problem win98 just pops up a "white window" saying something about exception fault or something like that. As far as i remembers this is caused from IRQ's conflicts (either by soundcard or modems).

Odd. I have Disciples II and a Win 98a setup, and it installed fine. I'd suggest uninstalling it in safe mode, then making sure you have the minimum programs running in the background that you absolutely need before re-installing it. If you've got any popups, ditch 'em. If you've especially got a virus checker running, ditch it. (Don't just close it. Remove it from memory. Then reboot.) Get as close to a clean Windows 98 background as you can. Try ALT+DEL+CTRL *once* to see what's running. If you recognize any of those programs as things that aren't important to Windows, stop 'em--but be careful when you choose.
You might want to check your Control Panel settings for memory to see if you've got any special areas reserved for some specific use. And could you tell us your video card? Sometimes, they reserve memory space that conflicts with other programs.

Just a note on Fables comments, one only needs Explorer and Systray running for the OS to function correctly, on every gaming machine it is the thing to aim for

I agree with HLD - check the program doesn't need to be patched before installed. I installed (or tried to) Pools of Radiance - it not only wiped windows from my system (couldn't even load up in safe mode) it corrupted my hard drive. Too much stress over a well meant Christmas gift...
It may be that some part of the OS is corrupted - you may have to reinstall...if you do - I would have to sadly recommend a reformat beforehand - this was all I was able to do to recover...

That's the thing I can't even get as far as installing it onto my computer....it won't even read the disc or the first one anyway...the second one it will read as a music cd...and sometimes it will read it but that is it...My video card is Nvidia Gforce....I just got it installed.....which makes me wonder....after I got it installed all of this started happening...could be nothing though....your guys are great thank you for everything.....will do what I can but I still can't get it off of safe mode...

You might want to update the drivers of your video cards. You can get the latest drivers for your card

Sorry if this was said, I haven't read all the replies:
As others have said, Win98 could be corrupted. Try this out:
Start Menu > Programs > Accesories > System Tools > System Information
Tools > System File Checker > Scan for Altered Files
See if that does anything.

This may sound like a strange question...but has your new card been properly (physically) installed? I had a similar problem when my graphics card was not pushed fully into the slot...

Maybe Mr Sleep was right after all, you might need to reinstall OS to correct the problem as last option. But first you can try out what Yshania mentioned.

I had the person that I bought the computer from install it for me but I will still check it to make sure it is pushed into it's slot more securely....thanx
