Why do you need dual, if i may ask?

Do you need two processors or do you just want the geek points for having a dual processor machine?

If it's for the geek points, make sure that your case has a cryogenic cooling system.

For bonus geek points, run a RAID.

There is not point running dual processors, it wont add to speed except in an NT environment, when it will only speed things up marginally and will not improve game performance.

A RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) is when you run multiple hard drives with the same image on each either because they see a lot of access (in the case of a large database) or because you want to keep backups of you data and can't wait to do a standard overnight backup.

They're expensive and truly only practical for high-volume, high-bandwidth servers.

Fictional, eh? What's the imaginary budget? If you can swing it, just buy a Cray. Name it Hal or Joshua.

There are several levels of RAID. As long as it is fictional, you should go for a RAID lvl.10 which spreads your data over multiple disk drives while using a chunk of each drive for redundancy. That way, if a hard drive dies, you simply pull out the dead drive and insert an exact duplicate. From there, you regenerate your striped set (that's just what it is called) and your right back where you were before your drive crashed.

Well, I'm using a $2000 canadian budget before taxes. I got about $115 left.

This isn't supposed to be a gaming platform, and no software is too be added.

If it's not a gaming platform, this ficitonal computer must be for storing internet porn. Why else does anyone need a computer?

HLD,

That's a very good point. Kind of odd this is a school project. Too bad we weren't educated in the canadian school system. :D

Then we could all post in both English and French. Plus we'd understand the appeal of curling.

I, can already do both. whatever. :p

I've curled and it is fun. there was a curling club right behind my apartment where I previously lived and I knew some members. It's sort of like Bocce.

Plus, we'd get to build computers for storing Internet porn. Now that's a school project.

Do we get any grades for our help, since Aegis obviously gets merit for us doing his homework for him, we deserve a prize i reckon, some of that porn sounds good :D
