Quick, difference between SDRAM, and DDRAM

SDRAM - an old (back to Pentium 2?) interface used for memory that's pretty much slow as molasses.

DDR-SDRAM - the current standard for Athlon (and some Pentium) motherboards, it runs up to 266 Mhz. DDR motherboards are backwards compatible w/ SDRAM, but there's a major performance hit (even over how slow SDRAM is alone). They're currently trying to get DDR-333 out, but you need new motherboards that support it.

SDRAM isn't that bad, infact it is still better than anything made by RAMBUS (who suck!) i have moved over to DDR although tests done by Toms hardware guide said it was only 10% faster than normal SDRAM. The price increase is quite large, so if this is a system issue and you are short of change then stick with SD

But what is Rambus, more commonly known as RDRAM?

And where can I get it

RDRAM is a type of memory that is manufacturered by Rambus, Inc. Where SDRAM has a bus speed of 100 or 133 MHz, RDRAM has a bus speed of up to 800 MHz, so it can transfer data faster than convention SDRAM.

You can get RDRAM from just about any memory reseller or computer hardware retailer, but you need to be sure that your motherboard will support RDRAM before you buy any (it's also really expensive).

It was made with intel boards (so no AMD for you) and it is not worth the time and expense, it is a lot more expensive than conventional RAM and is total pants! I can find articles if needs be

Because they assumed they could make their own market and create a monopoly over RAM, thus creating whatever price they wanted, it is pretty standard really, but everyone just ignored them

There are both excelent in what they do but anand seems to know too many people because he gets things and test them berofe anyone else.

RDRAM is not as bad as it used to be. Intel's boards are based on it's architecture, which means it has better performance now compared to DDR-SDRAM. As for the price, check out Firingsquad's memory prices - RDRAM is now equal to DDR.

Or maybe it was THG that mentioned the equal prices ... whatever.

Either way, Intel just announced that it's future chipsets completely drop support for RDRAM. Good bye litigation-Rambus.
