I've heard that the Ring of Wizardry is only available in certain versions of the game. If anyone knows which versions it is/isn't available in please lemme know.

It's available in all official versions of the game. (I don't know what changes TeamBG's expansion makes.) It's dropped by someone in the game, and...

You can find it on the Friendly Arm Inn Map at coordinates: x=2555, y=3759 - even with ToTSC installed, according to
Dan Simpson's walkthrough.

The place I've looked for it is the spot near the Friendly Arm Inn. I can see the holw where it's supposed to be and it's not there. I found a couple other hole in the ground spots so why can't I get this one? And who drops it?

I vaguely recall reading that some patches will eliminate finding the ring, and I also heard somewhere that your pc has to be able to use it in order for it to appear....I'm not sure if any of this is true.....but despite my best efforts I have never succeaded in finding the thing....

It wasn't there before or after I patched it, and I'm glad that I'm not the only one who couldn't find it.

I think you're missing the point. I know the coordinates, I can see the hole in the ground where it's supposed to be, but I just think I got one of the newer versions where I'll have to wait till Baldur's Gate to get it. Oh well.

There's another place where the ring can be found.

It's dropped by Sunin, located in a house in the same sector of Baldur's Gate as the Flaming Fist compound.

My friend had the same problem. He could find the stash where the ring was supposed to be, but the ring itself was not there. The difference between his game and mine was that he had the DVD version, so I'm fairly certain that the DVD must be pre-patched.

I assembled this list by searching the GameBanshee site and also found some posts by searching on ring AND wizardry/diamond AND Xzar (posts by Weasel and Laurelei) in this forum:
Ring of Fire Resistance & Iol Gem & Star Sapphire
Outdoor Zone (AR5500) - Found within cliff wall at x=1955 y=2370
Ring of Protection +1
Outdoor Zone (AR2800) - Found in niche at x=1005, y=1115
Ring of Wizardry
Friendly Arm Inn - Found in a tree along bottom of map at x=2555, y=3760
Ankheg Plate Mail
Nashkel - Found in field at x=185 y=2740
Cloak of Non-Detection
Outdoor Zone (AR2200) - Found beneath tree at x=4390 y=3470
Wand of Frost
Nashkel Mines - Found in tree at x=165 y=180
Scroll of Cloudkill & Scroll of Chromatic Orb
Area directly West of the Nashkel Mines Overland Map at x=1793 y=414
Ring of Folly (the wearer becomes feebleminded)
N. Sirine Area (AR3100) at x=855 y=1603
Diamond
Outdoor Zone (AR2700) - supposedly near where you can find Xzar and Montaron in a tree at x=4418 y=1957
???
Wolfwere ship level 1 (AR1501) at x=210 y=506

I can confirm the first statement. Before patching I've found the ring, but with the 1.1.4315 -patch installed the ring isn't there. So I normally start playing without patch, go and get the ring and then patch the game.
The second point - AFAIK that's not correct. I've found the ring with fighter and thief -personal chars.

So is Moleman, so the answer lies elsewhere. I have similiar experiences as Moleman BTW.

@dios, Astafas: there could be different versions for different parts locations. For example one version for UK, one for Scandinavia and one for Central Europe (because of differences in localized versions, and logistics reasons). If Astafas and I have been playing the Scandinavian version, and Dios UK or Central European one, that could be one explanation.
BTW after I've patched the game even the stash is disappeared.

@ dios: here's another thing I couldn't do. I could successfully pickpocket Drizzt but it would say he had no valid items, but everyone else is getting a nice sword and a few other things. Try Pickpocketing him and see what happens. I think that Drizzt having no stealable items and the Ring not being there are a different version of the game.

I get also message "no valid items" when pickpocketing Drizzt. Though I haven't tried it
without applying the patch (I wonder: if I get ring of wizardry without patch could I pickpocket Drizzt's swords without patch.... have to give it a try).

I have TotSC, the newest patch and even DSotSC installed, and I found the ring with my fighter, so it should really be there. But as someone else mentioned, it could very well be the difference of location. Just look at my version... censored!!

hehe
Anyway, another thing that is changed is the ankheg plate that should be found at the naskel field. The only thing I found there was a cloak that made the pc invisible and a pearl. The cloak is bugged, so that one's no good, I would rather have an ankheg plate that early in the game

But I think that the heads from teambg have changed that one...
