weapon proficiences - am I missing something?

During all materials I've been looking throgh the net about weapon proficiences I didn't find maybe the most important thing about it - HOW MANY I will get to spend during the game. This is critical info I think - does number of gained prof. points depends on class? How often you have the possibility to distribute one point while leveling up and how many points in total you will get during the game - not including those given at character creation.
And if it depends on character's class what would it be for most common classes (fighter, mage, thief, etc)

This is a hard one, I only know how far a class can specialize in, not when they get it.
Fighter - 5 stars
Paladin - 4 stars
F/M/T - 2 stars
Cleric/Mage - 1 star
fogot about the others...

I'm keeping track of my fighter's proficiencies: up until now, he got to spend one proficiency point every third level up (at level 12, 15, 18). Every other level, his THAC0 improved.

MAGE: 1 - 6
FIGHTER: 4 - 3
CLERIC: 2 - 4
THIEF: 2 - 4
BARD: 2 - 4
PALADIN: 4 - 3
DRUID: 2 - 4
RANGER: 4 - 3
FIGHTER_MAGE: 4 - 3
FIGHTER_CLERIC: 4 - 3
FIGHTER_THIEF: 4 - 3
FIGHTER_MAGE_THIEF: 4 - 3
MAGE_THIEF: 2 - 4
CLERIC_MAGE: 2 - 4
CLERIC_THIEF: 2 - 4
FIGHTER_DRUID: 4 - 3
FIGHTER_MAGE_CLERIC: 4 - 3
CLERIC_RANGER: 4 - 3
SORCERER: 1 - 6
MONK: 2 - 4
The first number means the amount of proficient point the character have at level 1, the second one tell you the rate that they will earn points, in term of levels.
So, at level 1, a monk have 2 proficiency points, and he/she gain one additional point for every 4 levels.

Only pure fighters can get more than 2 stars except Archers for ranged weapon and paladin-ranger and swashbucklers for 2 weap. style.
Barb., paladin, rangers, all multiclass fighters and some kits (thief and bard) and maybe monk (never played) get max 2 stars.
All others get max 1 star.
Enjoy your game

Paladins and Rangers get 3 stars (specialist) as a maximum in general. Not sure about the rest of your advice (i.e.) Bards generally only get one star. -

How do you know about these stuff Sabre? Do you use a DnD handbook, or is it in the web somewhere?

I use Infinity Explorer to look at the actual data file of the game, and simply cut and paste and edit where necessary.
lompo is correct about the Rangers and Paladin only getting 2 stars - although they both can have 3 stars in Two Weapons Style.

No apologies, the game is so big tha I think nobody knows everything, and that is one of the need of this forum: the few things everybody knows end up in knowing almost everything all together.
Enjoy the game!
