ability scores maxxed?

ok i've been lurking here for weeks since starting the game, now i have most of my chars up to 10th level, but i have a question. when i equip stat enhancing weapons, the score does not raise. the item claims +2 str and when i equip it, my strength score stays the same. this is happening on all characters, any items. i've tried unequipping everything and starting from scratch, to no avail. i notice no changes on either abilities or ac when they get boosted to a certain level. anyone else have this problem?
