Well, CE has got a post on the meaning of art over there, so I thought I would post one just for art itself. Drop an image or a link of some art that you like - doesn't have to be paintings, just whatever you like to experience as art.
I myself have don't know a lot about art, but I came across something by Caspar David Friedrich once, and it just amazed me so much that I ran out and bought all the books I could find on him. This website has some of his most famous works, and some of my favorites: "Monk by the Sea" - that's me! - and "Wanderer Above the Sea of Mist," and "Man and Woman Contemplating the Moon." (All pics are clickable for enlargement.)
Amazing stuff. Anyway, stop in and peruse at your leisure, and drop off something while you're here!

Bouguereau, anyone?
I like the majority of this guy's stuff, like:
The Bohemian
And Gerome has some amazing stuff like this one:
Police Verso
Or, on another tack: architecture. Ever looked at Frank Lloyd Wright's
Fallingwater?
Fun thread, monk-man. Anybody else?

Nice thread, Monk
@Lazarus: I can't load the first two of your links - it might be my browser, does anyone else have this problem?
Some works I like:
Nude descending a staircase No 2 by prominent Dadaist Marcel Duchamp
Contrasting sounds by Wassily Kandinsky
The State Hospital , an installation by Edward Kienholz (couldn't find any pictures of Roxy's, unfortunately

)

Damn you guys are high class intellectuals.
I haven't heard or seen any of this.
Thanks for making me feel stupid!

Miss C Elegens: I don't know why you can't get into those sites. I will try this: each of those two are actually enlargements from thumbnails on another page of a website, so I will direct you to the website itself rather than the enlargements:
Bouguereau Of his stuff, I like most "The Bohemian," but there are other fine works, too. Here, I'll include another site with an index of some of his work:
Bouguereau, again. This site has a lot more works, (the "Shepherdess" series are more of my favorites), but they seem to have darkened the images a bit too much for my taste. His work is usually very soft and light.
Now for Gerome. Here again is the
index page, but it is actually from the same overall site as the Bouguereau, so maybe you can't get in this one either. Again, I'll give you a back-up:
Art Renewal Site This has got the Pollice Verso that I tried to show above right at the top of the list. But look through his collection - it is spectacular! His lighting effects are almost without equal (IMHO). See if you can find one called "The Carpet Merchants" - beautiful!
Whoah! Long post - sorry!

@CM: I had no intention of making anyone feel stupid, and I hope I haven't offended.
As I said in my original post: I have no real knowledge of art, but I do find things that I like every so often. This is just a place to post a link to something you find worthwhile. It can be artwork, or architecture (as Lazarus submitted), or a link to a website you think is well-made, or poetry, or a photograph of a cool automobile, or ... well, anything!
@CE: thanks for your post.
Some of Keinholz's stuff is ... scary
Thanks for the Dada link, but I still don't get it!
@Lazarus: thank you, too. BTW: I had no problem with any of your links. Nice stuff.
