I suppose this is mandatory? If so, it's probably the quest that will make me shelf Oblivion: the game is already dragging on too much.

No it isn't mandatory, go get the Great Welkyn Stone from Miscarcand and forget about it if you want. It will make the next step of the quest a bit tougher though.

Thanks. Without your news, I'd probably quit. Oblivion is very bland and boring, even with mods. The whole worlds feels so... artificial. Like a high school drama.

You only have to close three gates for the main Quest, Kvatch and two outside Bruma, the rest you can ignore. Of course if you're a role-player playing a goody two-shoes you are effectively obliged to close every one you come across, [expletive deleted] that for a game of soldiers! Which is one reason I only played a Paladin once, and spent most of my time in the wild walking around with my eyes shut. "Oblivion gate? Where, I can't see one!"

It's actually better for the good folk of Cyrodil if you ignore the main quest completely. If you don't stick your nose in, Manky Camaron (I think he's our Prime-ministers alter ego by the way) gives up when he can't find Martin or the Amulet of Kings and no more Oblivion Gates open up anywhere, ever! Bethesda really know how to write them don't they?!

Yeah, you definitely don't play their games for the story...

It's pretty inexcusable too. There should be a timer set when you get the Amulet of Kings, and if you don't get it to Mr Incompetence Personified within a set time span you should become the Empire's most wanted on the assumption you're a member of the Crimson Dawn. No prison sentence if you're caught, instant death.

Yeah, that bothered me too: I played a long time before getting the amulet to him.
