Guys, help!

I got a gift of BG EE on Steam (damn sweet thing, too, being gifted by someone half a continent away ) and I finally managed to run it. I know people are divided over it and Tutu and whatnot, but I'm pretty excited about it because I actually never got to finish BG1 in the first place.

Anyway, it looks cool so far, but the speed, gods, the speed! It's so damn slow, especially the character walking speed, but it seems like everything is a tad slow, to be honest. Is there anything that can be done about it? I can pretty much go and make a batch of pancakes or cookies in the time it takes the characters to actually get somewhere, and I don't fancy playing in the kitchen... :/

Funnily enough, the speed in BG:EE is actually FASTER than it was in the original. That being said, you could edit some of the file or make changes within the configuration utility of BG1/SoA/ToB, but I looked around the directories and couldn't find anything like that. You could always add in the Boots of Speed, to help out.

Since v.2011 it's now possible to manage the game speed through the Ini file.
In Win 7 the file Baldur.ini is located in <User>\Documents\Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition.
The variable that controls how fast everything in the game's going on is 'Maximum Frame Rate'. I believe the value 60 should suffice while by default it equals to 40. In the original it was 30 iirc.

I found that tip while googling the problem, and did that already... the frame rate in the ini file was specified as 30, I changed it first to 45 then to 60 but it didn't change anything at all I don't really want to cheat in boots of speed, but I guess I will have to, I just don't have enough time nor energy to watch them crawl around a meager village for hours...

Also, all the cinematics have horrible, jagged sound, as if they were freezing every half-second. I thought changing the frame rate would help with that, but it doesn't, so I guess editing the file does nothing - maybe that's because I have the steam version? I don't know anything about that at all, so I'm guessing here.

Before the patch this trick was useless. You *should* patch the game first.

And btw the boots of speed unbalance the earlier game seriously.

Well, that explains a lot, thanks. But how do I patch a steam game? I don't really know the first thing about this, I googled the matter and it seems there are no patches available for the steam release for some reason (?)

Sorry I'm being dumb here, I never thought I'd come into contact with Steam and I don't know anything about it, it's just that my birthday was a week ago and a friend three countries away sent me a gift so now I'm lost in unfamiliar waters - plus, wanting to enjoy my game

Edit: I found instructions to make SK work, for a steam version even, but it doesn't. Welp, I guess I'll just have to suck it up...?

Steam should automatically patch the game as new patches are updated. I am a bear of small brains so I might have that wrong.

Actually, BG1 is the only one of the series I have actually finished. Multiple times.

I came close with BG2:SoA a couple of times but never made it to the end. I never start a new game in BG2, I always begin in BG1 with a new character. So much to do, always a reason to restart.

Hey! When BG1 came out here in Poland, it was on 6 CD's, and most people didn't have a pc that cpuld run it! Our family was exceptional because my father was an architect and was right there at the front when new design methods came out. This meant I could only play a bit when the pc was free, which was not often, and without sound, because sound was not necessary for my father's workstation. I remember the PC breaking down, taking the game with it, when I reached the ankheg-infested farm all those years ago. Since then I moved on to other games and my interest was only rekindled by BG2 that my ex partner had and didn't use in 2005. So this is all perfectly legit.

Incidentally, as this is the more-or-less first for me, I must say it's a really cool game, and some things are actually better than in SoA. But some things are made oddly, like the way you can't even check who a newly met npc is when they propose to join you, and no dialogue option to tell them "party is full, sorry."
But what was the strangest, for me, was how [SPOILERS]

doppelgangers in Candlekeep would morph into their "default" shape on attacking. This was really odd. I mean, here I am, more or less blindly trying to find my way through an intrigue that, for some reason, centers on me, a poor twice-orphan, coming back to the only home I knew and finding only some intangible suspicions about the people I've known and liked. This is supposed to be the harrowing experience of slaying the loved ones in self-defence and not even knowing why they attack, right? Not knowing who to trust, who is real and who isn't? What's the point, then, of giving me tangible proof that I'm fighting a doppelganger, thereby casting all the emotional impact away? That was really weird.

But all in all I'm having great fun, I made a Wild Mage and sometimes she gets hiccups Hilarious. Still slow as snails, though, which is really annoying, but I guess can't be helped. Thanks for trying anyway, guys

I don't have the BGEE but try running notepad as administrator when you edit the ini.

Hey all, I'm just posting this since it's a quasi-resolvement of the issue

The game got updated this morning (all by itself like Claudius said it would) and now they walk briskly like SoA got me used to . Since I did edit the ini file, I suppose the change just got implemented now.

Plus, I found assorted solutions to make SK work, none of which did it for me, so in the end I resorted to somewhat... invasive methods, which do work. For future reference: copying a BG EE save to SoA save directory enables you to edit it as if it was a SoA save (some items are warned as "not existing" but they didn't disappear or anything). Then you just paste the save back to EE. I never even realized how much I depend on cosmetic changes by ShadowKeeper
