Limitations in ToB

I've never actually run Jan or Aerie through all of ToB, so I was wondering if the add-on allows them to learn spells above 6th level. And if so, up to what level can they learn? In advance, thanks. :)

Fable, I thought you were one of the guru here!!

Well, in my game, Aerie ended casting wish and other ninth level spells, so I think it should be the same for Jan! :p :p :p

oh, and without cheating, maybe THIS was your real question!!!! :D :D

@Littiz, the problem with Jan is, I think, racial in nature, so I'm not sure if he can learn the high level spells.

As to being a guru...I never claim, under any circumstances, to be a guru. This let's me conveniently duck responsibility whenever it seems safer. :D ;)

Fable,

Aerie and Jan can both get enough exps to cast ninth level spells (and enough special abilities to gain the additional spell slots that way).

What should limit their casting ability is Intelligence. Both have INT of 16. The rules (AD&D 2nd Ed.)state that they can not learn spells of higher than 8th level. This has not been implemented as both can scribe level 9 spells in SOA and get normal advancement to 9th level when it becomes possible in TOB.

There is certainly no 'racial' limitation and if there was it wouldn't (sensibly) be gnome as they are the only race to allow for a 19 INT! - Curdis

True, @Curdis. So where Jan is concerned in particular, the limitation is his Intelligence of 14. An item that boosts INT in ToB is the logical cure-all.

They never implemented any of the racial restrictions when it comes to how higha level you can become. And low intelligence only prevents learning not casting in this game. So drink a potion and learn as many as you can.

Low Int only prevents scribing...

Pedant here,

@fable - Jan's INT is 16, potions are all that are required to overcome game restrictions.

@Bruce Lee - The racial restrictions (levels) was an AD&D 1st edition rule there is no such rule in AD&D 2nd Edition. - Curdis

What I did was boost Aeries int and wis using the machine of Lum the Mad. She never had a problem, at least not with the mage spells. As for the priest spells, I can't remember what she could cast near the end.

Damn, @Curdis, you're right! I had Jan in my last party-but-one run-through, and I'd still forgotten that. Shortterm memory is the first thing to go when you hit senescence.

Er...

What was I saying?

@Fable, I looked it up on Game Banshee before I posted the level eight spell restriction part :) .

I turn forty next month and it is the knees that go first. - Curdis
