Glitch while escaping Taris?

So I've played through KotOR 3 times and have never had any problems, but I'm playing it on a different computer this time. I've made it all the way through Taris without a hitch. At the moment, I've reached the Ebon Hawk and it went to the cut scene with Malak giving the orders to resume the bombardment and it has showed the city being destroyed. It showed the Hawk dodging all the debris and leaving the planet with the string of Sith fighters on its tail.
Now, at this point, it should show the cut scene where Carth tells you to go man the guns and you do the fighter simulator and destroy the Sith ships. However, the game crashes before it gets to that part. Er, I shouldn't say "crashes," because when I minimize it and open the task manager it says it's still running. But the screen just goes black and the little blue KotOR cursor is just sitting there -- I can still move it around but nothing happens. So I guess technically the game is just "frozen" -- it's like it just got stuck between those two cut scenes.
I've heard there have been issues with these Sith fighter cut scenes before. Is there some sort of patch or other way I might be able to fix this? I'm currently running the game on a 64-bit OS. When I first started playing here on the 64-bit, it kept crashing like halfway through the Endar Spire. A friend recommended that I add the "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1" to the .ini file in the game folder, and when I did that fixed the crashing problem. Would that possibly be what's causing the problem here? I just don't know why it would be an issue now when the rest of the game has worked fine...
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. If more info is needed, just let me know
P.S. I'm running the game in compatibility mode with XP service pack 3
