Arcane + Melee/Ranged?

I've been playing for a while, and I was wondering if there's a way to - as a sorcerer or wizard - take a spell such as Ray of Frost or Shocking Grasp and essentially add it to a weapon?

For instance, in Pathfinder (outstanding tabletop rpg btw) which is essentially what DnD 4.0 SHOULD have been (still prefer 3.5 just because of the amount of books) a Wizard can opt to have a bound item which they can channel their spells through.

So if I end up in close quarters combat with my Sorcerer, and he's got a shortsword or a staff, can I smack the enemy with it (standard melee attack roll) and via a concentration or spellcraft check, also imbue that single attack with an appropriate touch spell?

I can see this being plausible if the spell were channeled to the weapon before hand, or even during combat. The only negative i see is that it offsets the balance of a character at lower levels, basically taking two standard actions and cramming them into one.

That said, if I wanted to imbue - say - crossbow bolts with a spell, what route would I take for that? A craft skill of some sort? That's something I've never taken in a game, so a pointing in the right direction would be outstanding.

Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't worry about the balance: your chances of hitting are low and you'd have to be in melee. Moreover, you're using damage spells, so you're making things needlessly hard on yourself.
That out of the way, Spellsword (Complete Warrior) and Arcane Archer offer what you're looking for, for melee & ranged respectively. Now we're venturing into the realm of the Gish, and that's a very viable and powerful route: you use your magic to enhance your combat capabilities. Is that what you want?
Also, the Duskblade (PHBII) channels touch spells via his weapon all day long. With some minimal houseruling, you can let it work for ranged too. Beware that the Duskblade is also a Gish, and not a fullcaster.
