Mysteries of Ember

Possible spoilers
OK guys, one quick question. Why is Ember available throughout the entire course of game? I've recovered "the sword" and judging by what's going on the final battle or whatever is about to happen. Many places have been added and removed during Act III but for some reason Ember stands proudly.
Am I missing something?
