Witcher 2: What books do I need to buy?

I'm in Act 1 of Witcher 2
Does buying and reading books update my journal or do anything, or are they just for flavor?
For example: I know that the Nekker and Endrega books may help move those contracts along, but I can get the same effect from just killing enough of the beasts - hence, the books are really not necessary. The rest of the books didn't seem to have any impact on my game - at least not that I picked up on.
I am willing to buy books for journal and quest updates, because I do like to collect items and have that sense of completion (like, I did everything I could in the playthrough), but I want to know if I'm just wasting my money.
So, what books should I buy from Einar Gausel, if any?
