Welcome to the GameBanshee Football Pub! We serve a variety of beers, crisps and deep fried horrors! Ok that's really besides the point, let's talk about soccer! :p

The Continental Cups, the World Cup, local matches -whatever floats your boat. Thoughts, feelings, musings, poetry.. let's come out of the closet. Right now the qualifications for the continental cups are getting underway, so we at least have a nice thread to return to during the upcoming year, up until the 2012 UEFA Cup for example.

I caught most of the UEFA qualification game Norway-Portugal, two days ago. Anyone seen it? Norway made one, sly goal that made me regret not heading out to Ullevaal Stadion that evening. Basically the guy up front mislead the goalie and took the ball from him, just as the goalie was about to kick it away from the goal.

It could have all been some lucky coincidence, if the Norwegian player hadn't given a bold hand signal to his team mate on the right, like 'hey watch this'. He took the ball from the goalie, fell, passed it to the right and let his team mate score for him. Portugal was stumped.

The rest of the game Norway defended well, Portugal didn't get to score. Couple more opportunities here and there on both sides. I can't speak for Portugal, but Norway seems to have changed a lot since the World Cup. They're definitely on the foreground now, having beaten France, Iceland and Portugal in a row. They play more assertively than they have in quite a few years.

So, seen a good game recently? Were there yourself? Threw a few punches afterward? Relate your best tales assisted by the finest lager this house has to offer: the Red Banshee Bock.

It is not soccer - it is football. Just 'cause the americans think that a game where you throw and catch or run while holding a ball the majority of the time is call football does not mean we have to adhere to it.
Football, football, football - game played using your feet and mainly your feet.

And yes - that Norway match really blew open that qualifying group.

That's a little harsh. Well go on, change the topic name then! :p

I'll change the post itself. :o ;)

I need to clarify some things. Just how authentic is this pub? To be a traditional, original, Football Pub the beer would have to be served at room temperature, just like a good red wine. Lager of course would have to be ice cold if it's served at all; in the original Footy Pub Lager wouldn't have been there at all!

Are there spitoons provided and have you succumbed to modern PC trends and banned smoking? Is there even sawdust on the floor, can't claim to be a serious retro Football Pub if it isn't a death trap!?

On Topic; I haven't been to a football match since the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, when we stuffed the Spuds, or Pompey Rejects as we like to call them. Great game, completely expected to lose, hoped the score wouldn't embarrass us and we turned them over, best match I've been to in decades!

As I am a life time Masochist/Pompey* supporter I will be going to games soon, and will regale you with my experience of inedible meat pies and traumatic defeat after traumatic defeat as we progress on our road to Division 3, or worse!

* Pompey = Portsmouth FC (at least until we get liquidated!).

For some inextricable reason, I have the sneaking suspicion that a comment on American football would leave me in the vast minority here, eh?

A proper cellar-temperature beer, though? That's a notion every man, woman, and (suitably aged) child should be able to get behind, no matter the sport.

Yes, yes it would :D

So Champions League tonight .....

Well beer should be served at room temperature, so I guess you're referring to the waste horse water that Americans mistakenly call beer!:mischief:

A goalless draw for Portsmouth this week-end, disappointing but considering the opposition's record not terrible. We need to start winning soon though, but I fear it's not going to happen.

I was hoping to catch København Rubin (I'm not even interested in the game involving Twente), but due to an unexpected job offer this morning I am totally behind on my studies today. I'll be working until the wee hours of tomorrow morning I'm afraid. :(

I never catch games afterward. Maybe a summary of one if I know something extraordinary happened, but never the whole thing. It's live or nothing. :p

Ouch - annoying.

Being a Dane, I'm of course interested in the FCK vs. Rubin - mostly because Denmark is close to getting enough points to get a team directly to the Champions League group stage.
It'll be a difficult match for FCK, cause Rubin is not small team - properly the most difficult from the fourth seeding, but - well - I hope FCK for once will make a good effort :D
(they usually mess up)

I would join this pub and discuss the world's greatest game, my team (Arsenal), Champions League and other tournaments, but I hesitate due to the severe vulgarisation and Americanisation implicated in the thread title.

Mixed results for the Dutch teams in the CL and EL last time. Twente got robbed by the referee. The 4-1 wasn't an exact view of the match. Ajax was better now against Milan. In the EL FC Utrecht is doing great. They could win from Liverpool. Liverpool was lucky with that point. PSV won easy against Metalist Charkiv. Normally that seems to be a tough opponent, but now it wasn't. AZ was nothing.

This weekend it was the regular competition again. Biggest surprise was the winning of Utrecht against Ajax in Amsterdam. 1-2. Current champion twente won against Groningen. The club of my own living place, Veendam, won again. This time against fc eindhoven, the second club of that place. Veendam is playing in the first division, that's one division below the highest division of the Netherlands.

Well, this week EC qualifications again. The matches will be played this Friday. The Netherlands have to play against Moldova. Interesting will be the clash between Germany and Turkey. Portugal against Denmark will also be interesting. Portugal doesn't play good at the moment and Queiroz got fired for that. Now Paulo Bento is the new coach.

Well - Denmark is not playing well either and have a number of key injuries. So I think it looks pretty solid for Portugal unless Denmark is rather lucky.

Right now I'm fuming! As you may recall I'm a Portsmouth supporter, and last year we entered administration and had 9 points deducted, that killed off any chance of us avoiding relegation and we threw all our energy into the FA Cup and ignored the league.

Now, when Liverpool are on the verge of administration the EPL announce that they will break the rules for them and not impose a nine point penalty if they go into administration!!! Uneven playing field or what? I hope that if that happens Portsmouth sue the EPL for every penny they can get.

There's always different rules for different parts of the leagues. Unfortunate, unfair - but alas, that's how it is. No doubt it is because Liverpool has a chance to play European football still.

?

The rules are the same, it's just the way they are implemented which is inconsistent. European football has nothing to do with it; the rules are laid down and were ruthlessly enforced for one club, and are now being ignored for Liverpool.

PS It's only because Portsmouth were victimised last year that Liverpool are in Europe at all, we qualified for Europe through the FA Cup, but were refused the chance to play in Europe by the FA and EPL and Liverpool where given our spot! This is just adding insult to injury!
