Quick Difficulty Setting Question

What is the effect of setting the difficulty from NORMAL to HARD or VERY HARD? could someone please post, so I can put my mind to rest on this?
I have looked and looked for my manual but cannot find it anywhere... I am playing on VERY HARD.
I am wondering how much trouble it will give me overall. I seem to be shooting up levels a bit too fast, but my ammo keeps running out.
