What am i doing wrong?

Post by Apsis »

So i started another run of good ol' PsT with Qwinn's excellent mods aiming to get both level 7 and 12 upgrades as a mage, a first for me but i am extremely disappointed with mage class. Someone mentioned wreaking havoc on the battlefield with spells but how on earth can anyone do that? Seriously, there is not a solid damage dealing spell apart from magic missile, no way to protect yourself from being disrupted (like stonesking or pfmw) and there are no enemy mages whatsoever to make it worth making the lead character a mage.

As far as i can see playing a mage means you run in circles while casting a force missile or two once a while. Is that fun? I'd like to hear what spells spell combos people use while playing a wizard.

Note: I know this game is story/dialogue oriented so please no you're missing the point posts.

Cheers!

In my opinion, the Mage class in torment is very unsatisfying.

Excluding buffs, the only spells I found reliable on the battlefield were chromatic orb (stun), blade storm (excellent damage to multiple foes), and black sphere (okay damage but induces sleep).

Too many spells are interrupted by irritating cut scenes which I quickly lost patience with. And too many spells require multiple clicking, occupying the cursor, so those were quickly abandoned as well.

IMO, skip the Mage class unless you want to experiment with some other tattoos or open up new dialogue XP, primarily with Dak'kon and Ignus, which I enjoyed.

Regardless I understand the sentiment of your post and look forward to answers from some of the others here.

The first few levels as a Mage will be very limited, as in every D&D game.
One of the better spells later on is Cloudkill, especially if you let Annah scout ahead.
It's true that most good spells are buffs, and I have the feeling TNO was intended to be played as a Fighter/Mage.

I've found the mage class very powerful ultimately in PS:T. There isn't a great selection of spells, and the video for one spell is repetitive and annoying, but over time you get a character with a lot of versatile options in combat.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

Even with all these flashy high level spells mages are way behind thief and fighter in combats. With the latter two i can clear the first level of fortress of regrets in under two minutes but with an even high level mage it takes lifetimes (literally) if you do not depend on healing charms.

It appeares to me that mage spells need a *major* overhaul, like disabling some cutscenes, new spells to protect against physical attacks, some items to reduce casting time and revising the multiple throwings of some spells like ice knife and force missiles.

I know this sounds like trying to bring PsT in line with BG2 but seriously mages are supposed to be powerful right? I dont feel that powerful when i am running for my life from shadows or when my mightiest spells bounce off some stupid tanarri.
