Being curious as I am, I wonder, for those of you who chose not to fight Ser Cauthrien at the Arl of Denerim's estate, how did you go about escaping Fort Drakon? At the time it was only my naked mage in the prison, so I opted to send Zevran and Morrigan after him (as they were regular party members and were well equipped).

Zevran was able to bluff his way through the guards up till a certain point, and I'm curious to know if all NPCs are capable of this? It strikes me that characters like Sten who aren't be as glib might not be able to, whereas Alistair would be too recognizable. My current play through is on Nightmare mode, so it would be nice to know before hand who I should send into the tower so I can be better prepared to face more or fewer fights.

What kind of character are you playing at the moment? I once tried to let myself get arrested with my rogue and got out pretty much all by myself. Tricked the guard, opened the cell, got some disguises for myself and Alistair, etc.

I'll be a Reaver, specializing in two-handed weapons. Since my character is the group's tank I suspect I won't have Alistair in the party again when I go after Anora, so it'll probably be just her.

Fort Drakon isn't concentrated with guards to be completely inescapable on her own, I realize. But I'd rather not down all my health poultices because my main character was swamped by a few enemies. I'd prefer to send in a pair of party members, if I could.

For pure entertainment value I like the Zev-Ohgren combo. Or any combo with the dog. The first exchange with the dog is great if you let the dog take over. Buit, yes, Sten is...difficult.

Sten does seem to get detected a bit easier at a certain point. Mostly from what I've seen though, about any combo will work so long as you pick the right conversation options and the combo isn't just too nonsensical.

Spoiler Alert:
Spoiler
It is easy even for a Warrior to get out. Just entice (for female PCs, it's called Seduce, yes) the guard into your cell (With sex (yes, you get some naughties with the guard) or otherwise), get the key, and lock him inside. IF strong enough, you might be able to kill him thru the bars. Your equipment is in a nearby chest. In the room with the stairs up (not usable at this time, btw), one of the Guards has a list of passwords, and there is a spare uniform in the Armory. I got as far as the Room with the Ballistas before I got found out.

Doing it this way, Alistair and Morrigan joined me in the final room.
End Spoiler.

I was captured WITH Alistair after losing the battle with Ser Cauthrien, and with my PC being a rogue, we just escaped after masquerading as guards for a while. I didn't end up sending anyone in for the rescue, I'll have to try that next time.

When I played as a rogue, I did the exact same thing as Nightmare. During my mage playthrough however I had Morrigan and the mabari rescue me, where the dog was the one that came up with the plan.

Doing my first play-through with my Mage and I bluffed the guard and overpowered him and basically waltzed out with only 1 battle when I got detected. My pooch stayed curled up by the fire ....

Here is my advice when your at Fort Draken- not the archdemon part.

Trick the guard to let you out, tell him that you since darkspon coming and use tatics because the guards can over whelm your, All Powerfull Master Mage. This would be the time to know the fire spells all the way up to the super nova inferno flame spell in your pallet. Then use those freeze spells with the super earthquake spell because the guards love to stun you and kill you. Make sure that that you split up the guards as they chase you and hide befind walls before you unlesh your mage's furry on his or her victims
