Well i picked up the freedom spell necessary to release those mages. The only problem is is that the spell is level 9 and my mage can only memorize spells lv 6 and lower. So can I still advance in the story or am i screwed?

Just use it as a quick item...

you dont need this bloke anyway. he just gives you a little quest to help him steal some old treasure (nothing fantastic - you get some high level scrolls and a rod of magic absorbtion but that's it).

but yeah, as rapier said, just use the scroll as a quick item and youre in.

First, that quest is not needed to leave the underdark.
Second, use it as a quick item, there is no need the memorize 9 lv spells since you cannot cast any of those in the game, unless you remove the XP Cap.
