Maybe because I'm not at all familiar with the Planescape world, I didn't understand the end of the game. What is the place I end up in? A lot of demons and other creatures are fighting, and obviously I join the fight. Why? Now when I've got my mortality back, why do I have to "repay" in this way? What good is it supposed to do?

It was supposed to introduce you to the second game (which never came around

Replay the game and make sure you read everything about the Bloodwar i beleive there are some threads in this forum about the bloodwar.
The end is a reference to the question what can change the nature of a man. The wonderful thing about the ending is that it is always in the opinion of the player as to what the ending means

Thank you, Brink and mr Zzzz.
I suspected it was the Blood War I joined, but didn't really understand why this was suitable as repayment for all the horrible things I've done. Now, I read a bit more about the Blood War, and it does make sense in a symbolic kind of way.
I think the ending was good, as Sleep says, open for individual interpretation. I suppose the didn't release a sequel since P:T never sold very well, but I actually think it's better left with no sequel.
Tomorrow, ToB is finally released in Sweden, and also I have Luremaster to play, but if I replay P:T, I think I will do it solo with Dak'kon, he's the NPC I've liked best of all in the Interplay games.

I quite agree with you about the sequel thing, it is best left as an open ended ideal rather than curtailing it.
ps wasn't the music at the end fantastic

Whether meaning to or not, the splitting off of your character's mortality has caused an enormous amount of pain and suffering:
First, every time you died, another's physical existence was sacrificed in place of your own.
Second, your mortality wrecked havoc by itself.
Third, several of your most prominent personae were ruthless manipulators or sociopaths.
Fourth, you clearly had taken sides in the past with the lawful evil forces, as witness a conversation of yours in a bar, early in the game.
Intent has little to do with the results. It was your folly and thoughtlessness that led to the results, so you have to make restitution for it by opposing evil on a truly legendary scale.
