hey I'm just curious, what is the maximum amount of skill points you can have? (unspent, as a human) including the points from quests

Supposed you will reach level 100 then it's about 130 skill points totally:
- You will start with 2 native skill points.
- You will get 1 skill point per char level.
- You may get up to 9 skill points by quests per merc, vet and elite mode.

But don't fall now in 'skill point paranoia' (this is not Diablo 2 ).
You will see soon that 'maximizing a skill' doesn't automatically mean 'optimizing a char' since instead of eg. the 17th skill point in a specific skill you often will find better alternatives on other skill-tabs.

In practise it's probably the best to focus on 10-15 skill points on a skill resp. to set this amount of skill points manually during the hole gameplay.
That will allow you to reach level 3 for most powers and leaves some buffer for skill points provided by items.

In emegency cases keep in mind that with the Broken World addon you can reset your skill point allocations, and without the addon there are mods to do this too.

OK-OK...while having a balanced character is useful,so is having Mastery of a skill.
I have Critical Strike Mastery on my Vet fighter and 50% chance to about 5x damage is considered useful.

and whilst you can have 10-15 in lots..why?

I spent some of my points in quick draw so I can throw throwing kinives 7% faster! wow it's such a pity I use a crossbow.

I might get into trouble with the admins for this but I just don't see your point.

Please don't reduce my post like this.
First, while for some specific skills it may have sense to push them as fast as possible (there are a few) for many other skills the bonus will become smaller and smaller by each further skill point.

Of course in the addon there is a default NPC to reset skill. Like this you can set skill points as you prefer without serious consequences. If you prefer eg. +1% more damage/speed instead if +5% maximum health then just go for it and have fun experimenting with it.
However in v2.0-2.2 you should be more careful, to reset skill points here you have to edit your savegame or must use mods like the Hotfix mod (<= i appreciate that )).

Let's take Quick Draw, above 5 skill points only +0.5% till +1% speed per every further skill points. Well 1% is 1% percent - your brain is aware of this - but the effect is beyond human perception (expect you set here a couple of skill points at once).
So as soon you have reached once level 3 of Shrapnel Blast power (totally 10 skill points) it's useful to stop skilling here and to start increasing health a bit with Fortitude or to get (a further power level) of Silence or Repulse power. This often has much more notable effect/impact on the gameplay.

That's what i meant with focusing 10-15 skill points - to look around first for alternatives instead of non-stop pushing a skill - if you can later reach 20 skill points, the better!

Well,the powers are devastating and all that but take about a minute of normal fighting to recharge (obviously you know this but it's importatant to my reply)

so you stop skilling and focus on powers...you have powerful powers but what do you do when you've used them? go on as a 2nd rate until you get your 1st rate powers back?

Well, part of the skills (and points needed for them) that matter are the various skills that replenish class powers faster.

As KG said, the higher skill levels of these skills are hardly worth it. I mean 0.5% is really squat when you can pick up items to boost the recharge by 15% or more. The first 10 points in this skill are the most prosperous gains.

A character maxing a certain branch of skills with their points can be devastating, yes. However, they can also be too focused (which is the point of KG's posts, I believe). A fighter maxing out Crit skills and Armor skills is a tank. Period. And they get slaughtered by mages (yes, you may be beating them, but it's prolly an uphill battle). Spread points around a bit, play with other classes and have a fighter that is not so armored, but has a good bit of Absorption and a few tactical spells to toss around, and they can not only walk the Dark Wizards, but they become rolling machines of death.

They also become more challenging to play. Click-and-slash-and-make-a-sandwich style play is boring to me, and I find any one class restrictive at points. I'm constantly changing up spells and tactics during gameplay. A well rounded party is actually best (Fighter, Archer, Nature Mage, Combat Mage, then add as desired at Vet and Elite). Which is why I'm going with the Jack-of-all-trades now for solo. Rolling through just about anything, with skill points all over the 4 classes. (Though I really wish I could lead with the bow and change to melee on the fly *sighs*).

Though I do have a continued question for the older players. As I have never taken a character to level 100 (I start over too much :laugh , does the skill point gain stop then, or can you still slowly gain new skill points?

I can't really see a grave discrepancy, sorry. It's rather a matter of preferences.
One one hand eg. +7% more speed means +7% damage means +7% faster power recharge, i agree.
On the other hand you have spent further 5-10 skill points that a power is ready 7% faster respectively in 43 seconds instead of 46 seconds - well if prefer that then just go for it.

Actually it seems to be a matter what benefit/usability you see in defensive powers.
Keep in mind, as posted above i fully agree to get level 3 powers first (als 3td time now refering on this... ), but then i would try to get defensive power instead of a bit more/faster damage.
