Hi people who play and know this game.. :)

I understand the format of competition in the USA (teams divided by location North, South etc) but I would like to know more about the game, you know how offense and defense work. I've played once, but it was a school thing and it turned into a massive ruck! :D :D (More like rugby! :D )

Can you explain it to me peeps? Cheers, :)

hmm, imagine rugby gotten really screwed up, where only one guy can kick it, the kicker, all the forwards block the other forwards from your teams scrum half, who can throw the ball forwards. All the backs run up to get a pass from the scrumhalf, called the quarter back, when they catch the ball, they run until their brought to their knees. Or score a try, known as a touchdown.

Better than describing it, get a book!

Two sets of twelve people on the field, one set for each team. Each team has a line (usually 5 people). when the ball is snapped (the offensive centre snaps it to the quaterback) the lines meet, and hold each off. the quater back then hands it off, or throughs to one of the receivers or halfbacks/fullbacks. The player with the ball then runs like greased **** to the end zone. the defense tries to block the ball carrier, or nail the QB before the handoff/throw.
Thats the basic game. Now, onto special teams.

There are four special teams. Kick off, Kick off return, Punt, and Point after Touchdown.

Kick off and kick off return, the ball is kicked down the field, and returned by the other team. Simple enough. the punt is usually taken on the fourth down (every 4 downs possesion changes) when there is no hope of getting a touchdown. The ball is punted, either for a field goal, or to lower the yardage the other team will have. Point of touchdown has two options. Kick the ball, and get one extra point, or run it and get two. The other team of course wants neither, so they try and stop them. I hope that helps Nips.

Twelve? What the hell is up with that, Aegis? Next thing you're going to tell me is that there are three downs, people can be in motion moving towards the line of scrimage when the ball is snapped and the greatest player to ever take the field was Doug Flutie! Geeze! You Canadians do some funky stuff up north!

Seriously, you couldn't explain American football in a couple of paragraphs, so try these places out: nfl.com and Football for Dummies.

The worst thing about football, is it gets so damn slow, if you guys like watching football, watch some rugby, THATS A SPORT.

or if your really into violence, get into Australian rules football, thats a vicious game, even I won't play it.

I agree, it does get slow to watch, but it is very exciting to play. Also, I have watched Rugby, and do enjoy the sport very much.
