Yeah, yeah i know there have been other threads on this topic, but i'm looking for fresh answers ( ). Anyway is upgrading to Win XP worth it? It's actually not the money that bother me, but the compatibility with games. I have heard some pretty nasty rumours... Is it any worse than Win2K? I mean there were nasty rumours about it too, but there isn't a game that hasn't ran on it.

Your oppinion is highly appreciated.

Oh - BTW - I've heard (not tried) that Win XP is hard on the games untill you get all drivers upgraded - and still you'll most likely get some trouble with some.
But you could run 2 OS and switch to ei. win 98 when wanting to game, and Win XP when you want to work in programs (or games that run fine in XP)

But it is hard to find any concluding statements, because all people view OS diferent, and much depend on hardware
(I've heard from somebody that had to get a new Joystick because WinXP desided it would support his MicroSoft(??) joystick )

My exp with XP (lol), I had problems with the drivers it supports.

For example, I couldn't get drivers for my soundcart anyware.

Micro$oft knew the problem but no solution.
Company of my soundcart (lost the name) knew the problem but no solution.
The same with PB.
Via the PB forum I got to a site where they had the drivers...

It didn't support my ADSL modem ether and my keybord.

After that, it was pretty nice, but if you have 2000 (it's the almost same) I woudn't go for it.
If your windows(any version) works fine, then why go for XP?

There are some changes that are nice, but nothing great...

Conclusion: looks nice but the inside is still the same

XP is well... XP

It's screwed up several of my friends' computers. I don't trust it.

I installed XP professional on my computer, and I really like it. It is far more integrated, and runs faster and more smoothly. It is also a lot less prone to crashing than other versions of Windows.

I did have to upgrade my drivers so that everything was compatible, but that was a fairly simple process.

So all in all, my XP experience has been a positive one. Although, maybe having the professional version makes a difference.....

I have XP, and have only had problems running one game. I got it to run useing the Compatability Wizard, which lets me run the game in Win 95 compatablility mode. I was actually shocked that it worked correctly.

Personaly, I like XP. I like it a lot better than 95 or 98. It just seems a lot smoother. I have yet to get a serious crash that made me restart.

One serious flaw, however, evidently there is a security hole that lets hackers steal or destroy data files across the internet or implant rogue software. All the user has to do is connect to the internet, and hackers can seize control of all Windows XP operating system software.

I recieved this from our main office in Frankfurt. Microsoft has released a fix, but according to the FBI's National Infrastructure Protection Center, it does not work. They recomend you disable the products universal plug and play features affected.

Microsoft says the this is unnecessarry. Microsoft is also not going to alert customers about the importance of installing the patch

I upgraded a couple of win2k machines to XP here in the workplace. It looks like Teletubbies took over the computer. It is all bubbly and colorful. Putrid changes if you ask me. With more exploration, I'm sure it is quite similar to win2k, however, I'll take the latters more professional looking GUI anyday. Additionally, if your computer is more than two years old, you may want to stay away as it might be difficult to find drivers for any peripherals/cards connected to the machine. If your purpose is mainly focused on gaming, stick with the win98/win2k dual boot system. The other really nice upgrade with XP is remote administration. Again, if this isn't your boat, why bother. Final analysis:

The technical term is Upnp - Universal Plug and Play

There is another flaw which involves Java Applets/VM (not sure whether it effects scripts) because microsoft got into an argument with Sun (makers of Java) and then decided to write them out of their operating system, you can download it at 5.5MB, like the average user will know instantly how to do that. So all those shops that you buy from that use applets are incompatible with XP because they use Java VM (virtual Machine). This doesn't effect upgrades but does negate clean installations.

I just found out about the Java thing myself. I HATE downloads.

I got XP but I partitoned my HDD with a 98 sect and a XP sect.

In every aspect XP is better - but 98 is still the benchmark in my opinion and still has a firm hold.

All I can say is that I haven't had one problem with XP professional edition. It never crashes and it runs all of my games/software without a problem. I have read and seen first hand that the home edition of XP still has a few bugs, so it would probably be a smart thing to stick with the professional version.

@Vicsun Have you gotten enough answers yet?? About the now unsaid, isn't that the only way too afford MS products.

OT: I think it's pretty, a new look was needed. The actual OS is 2000 and that's a good thing, stable and will run just about anything, great memory management. All the nice NT features. For a MS product it's great. But like always a lot of security flaws, and high MSR(minimum system requirements).
