switching out characters

HOw many cahracters can I have in the team? And how do I switch them out. I am sure this is simple but I can't figure it out.
I believe the maximum is 3 companions.
You can change them by returning to whatever place is currently your home base in the main plot.
Where are you in the game at the moment?
