Dog & a haircut - 2 bits

So I'm new to this game but I heard that you can get a dog at some point in the game. Does anybody know how, when, & where you get this dog? Also I'm trying to get a haircut from Mr.Handy in My Megaton House but whenever I go to the haircut menu in the black circle where my head should be there's nothing. So I can't see my haircut or anything else for that matter. Is this a known glitch & if so can it be fixed? Btw, I'm playing on an Xbox360

Just one more thing. Is the dog invincible or is there some way to heal him? Also can you give commands to him and does he follow you everywhere?

Yes. You can give him stimpaks. Companions seem to heal on their own, though.

I think you can tell him to stay, but nothing sophisticated.

Yes.
