Weasel, the ISP is essentially the company which allows you to connect to the web since they hire dedicated lines to the 'backbone' which takes you all over the web. Without that link to the backbone, your not going to be able to get anywhere. Even cable modems and ADSL you still need to have an ISP to connect to.
If you wanted to be your own ISP, you would need to lease a dedicated line from the main telecommunications company which could be costly.
It's more worthwhile letting your ISP take care of this and just use them as your gateway to the web.
Hope this helps.

@Vehemence..Thanks that helped a lot

I was wondering if someone with a server could get around going thru an ISP...but I see what you mean..(At least I think I do)
Company A and company B could both be using another ISP to give service to their customer..right?

Well, even if you ran a server on the web, you'd have to connect to the web somehow, and to do that, you'd need an ISP. Otherwise all you've got is an Intranet.
Company A and company B both have the same customer? I'm not sure what you mean?

Like my town...it has two companies offering internet service. I believe both of them get connected thru another company. (I don't believe they have their own ISP...I believe they rent space/?? from another company.)

Yep. Essentially, they lease lines from your main telecommunications company for the area that connects them with the worldwide communication channels. I'm not sure about America, but in Australia, we have one main telecommunications giant that controls the network and backbone that leaves Australia and connects to the rest of the world.
