Oblivion keeps crashing

Whenever I start Oblivion and load my game, I'm like 5 seconds in the game and then it crashes. I've had these problems before, but then I could play alot longer. Should I patch the game (and which one should I use)? Or is it one of my mods? Also if I would patch the game, will my mods still work?

Apparently the game only crashes that quickly when I'm in the area of Vahtacen. Now what is there that makes my game crash that quickly?

EDIT: Apparently it's near the river where Vahtacen is located that it crashes.

In my case, yes.

Absolutely (Unofficial Patch fix a specific version (like 1.2), it will conflict with another version of Oblivion (higher and/or lower), but it is minor and your game and mods will still works).
It looks like most authors keep up with official patch(es)

EDIT: Do you have any mod which alter that area (or add fish, seaweed, etc)?
Actually, I have this problem -lag then crash- yesterday (around the Office of Imperial Commerce, caused by Great Oak Manor - going to tell the author tomorrow)

Try using OBMM or Wyre (or both), to see if it is mod related or not

I installed the official patch and then the unoffical and now the game won't even start. I tried unistalling the unofficial patch, but it still won't start up. The screen goes black for a second and then goes back to desktop.

Should I try reinstall the game and all its mods but without patch, cause I started to enjoy playing Oblivion.

Personally, I would do a complete uninstall and then reinstall the official game and official patch. Check that it runs properly. Then reinstall each Mod and check how it runs after each one, to see if it's possible to identify which is causing the problem. But, that' just what I would do. :)

would my save games still work?
Also, i have Franscesco. If I install it again, will my save games still be leveled by franscesco's standards?

After I installed Oblivion for the very first time I started to have problems so I reinstalled it. Much to my complete shock, despite the fact that my mod content was slightly different, my save games still worked.

I would not take that as a given, though. You may want to make a copy of your save game file and place it somewhere like your desktop. Then completely remove Oblivion from your computer and start the entire process again. Try pasting your save games into your Oblivion folder, if they work, great.. if not remove them and begin from scratch. It's what I'd do anyway :)

So I've reinstalled the game and all the mods. It still didn't work... at first. I began the proces of elimination by not using a certain mod each time I tried to start the game... Now it does work. It must been a problem with Tamriel travellers.
Anyway, I'm pretty angry with myself, since I propably didn't need to reinstall my game and... Well, the Arcane-university has big giant marks before the doors that lead under that tower. If anyone knows how this could have happened, please tell.
Also, all marauders and bandits now have nothing on. They always attack with fist and are naked! When killed I find dozens of callipers!!!
The outdoor area's are very... misty, morrowind like. I can't see anything far away, but when in the city I can see everything. Strange.

Anyway, it does seem Franscesco still works, so I'm not complaining, atleast not a whole lot.

Thanks all anyway
