it must be the Egg.
did u ever heard of an chicken plant???
But an EggPlant that sounds like something that really exists.
So the egg grew on a plant and the chicken came out of the egg.

Well if one belives in evolution - I'd say the a "proto"-chicken(or any animal the lays eggs, actually) would evolve from some kind of amoebe(sp?) - and then due to natures selection find it better to lay eggs instead of live offspring - so actually I would say the chicken(or the proto-chiken) lay the egg first.

I have to say that evolution seems the simplest way to explain this. Like Xan says, maybe it evolved from an Amoebe and a chicken emerged from other evolution etc.
Either that or the chickens came from outerspace....
