Swedish prisons - better than hotels?

A 48-year old man from Eastern Europe, is presently held in custody in Southern Sweden. He hit a 79-year old man in the head with a hammer. The victim is currently in a coma. The two men had never previously been in contact with each other. Motive for the crime? The 48-year old explains to Swedish police: "I want to stay in a Swedish prison. There, I get my own room, bathroom and TV on the room, good food three times a day, library, gym, Internet connection and possibility to study. Also, I get an income of $150 a month. I my country, I earn only $240 a month, and have to pay for housing, food etc. So it's much better for me in a Swedish prison."
English football hooligans taken into custody in Stockholm after a match: "This is great - much better than the hotel."

After reading Frank Abagnale's Autobiography entitled "Catch me if you can" I'm inclined to believe that the swedish prisons are better than hotels.
Except for one problem. I think the maid, would be some butch overweight tough guy named Tiny who's ultimate goal is to sodamize you in the shower. If I'm not mistaken, that kind of behaviour isn't included in hotels!

This debate has also existed in Denmark for a number of years - but our countries is close in customs, so it is the same discusion here. Many inmates in danish prisons live better than some people does IRL.
this is outragous IMO

The autobiography of Frank Abagnale. He spends some time in a swedish prison for what he did... long story, your best of reading the book.

@Xandax: I'm not surprised you have the same debate in Denmark since our countries are so similar socio-culturally. *sigh* The cost for one portion of food for innates(sp?) in prison, is three times higher than the cost for one potion of food for highschool youths. Both are finaced with tax money. Strange priority...
@Vehemence: Thanks for the link, I now understand why this guy has been in prison in Sweden - and elsewhere.

Very strange indeed - but without insulting to many people - I think the "lefties" have a great deal of the blame for this, because they don't want prision to be a harsh penalty because it doesn't help the criminals - and since about 50% in our countreis are "socialists" this will ensure that a great deal of people have this view - so it is hard to make any chances when appr. 20-40% of the voting-population is against it
- This is of course also a problem when trying to chance something that the "right-wing" people don't like - but at this stage we have a "socialistic" goverment, so that is a bit easier than the otherway around .
(Hmm - much rambeling -better stop now

Where did the North American prison system go wrong? All our prisons are are a bunch of oppertunistic horny guys in a shower, and bad food, and a toilet that everyone can watch you go into.
Hmm... I think I should plan a trip to Sweden...
