I'm pretty new to this game and I am having issues playing as a mage. What are some good combat tips? Is it possible to plan out the battle while paused, IE: spell casting, then unpause to have the actions carried out?

Yup, when the game is paused, you can issue commands like who to attack and which spells to cast where. Once you unpause, the commands will then be carried out. However, you cannot queue up commands; you can only issue one command, have it carried out, and then issue another. I think there's an option in the Auto-Pause menu to pause at the end of every round (roughly six seconds) so that you can re-issue commands after each action.
